Former Hatboro Cop Charged with Drug, Weapons, Cash Thefts

John Becker, a 17-year veteran with the Hatboro Police Department, surrendered to the Attorney General’s office Thursday morning.

A decorated police officer that had worked for the Hatboro Police Department until last spring is facing numerous charges related to his alleged misuse of authority to obtain drugs during a two-year period. John Becker, 42, of Horsham, a former detective sergeant with Hatboro Police Department, turned himself into the Attorney General’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation Thursday and was preliminarily arraigned before Hatboro Magisterial District Judge Paul N. Leo. According to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office, Becker, who joined the Hatboro Police force in 1994 and rose to the ranks of corporal in 2000 and sergeant in 2003, is accused of using police department informants to make drug purchases on his behalf. Hatboro Police Looking to Hire New Cop

The borough is hoping to fill a vacancy on the police force.

The Hatboro Borough Council agreed Monday night to let police Chief James Gardner extend a job offer to his first choice to fill a vacant slot on the force. Final approval for the job offer, which at this time is only conditional, will be discussed and more than likely approved at the council's next voting meeting on Monday, March 26. The new cop will join the force as a patrol officer and make a starting salary of just over $32,000, according to the chief. The new police officer will have to take part in three months of training in the borough. Currently, the force has 13 sworn officers and needs a total of 14 to be fully staffed, Gardner said.
