Gun Debate Advances as Toomey Brokers Deal

In a bill co-sponsored by West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, criminal and mental health background checks would be required for sales at gun shows and online.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey (R) and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) co-sponsored an across-the-aisle bill Wednesday that expands background checks for gun buyers. "Criminal background checks are just common sense," Toomey said in a statement on his website. "If you pass a criminal background check, you can buy a gun. It's the people who fail a criminal or mental health background check that we don't want having guns. That can be done without infringing on law-abiding people's gun rights. And we ought to do it." According to USA Today, the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act would require criminal background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows and online and penalize states that do not add records of felons …

I disagree. I could come up with piles of gov't regulation that would save one life if we were willing to sacrifice some more of our freedoms. I would start with my favorite : you want to save lives, take away my right to drive my car faster than 90 mph. Very easy thing the government could do, yet nobody seems to approve of that. Obama Unveils Gun Control Proposals

The recommendations are a result from Vice President Biden's commission that investigated U.S. gun laws in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

In an address to the public Wednesday afternoon, President Barack Obama announced that he will sign 23 executive actions that provide law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals and the public health community more tools to combat gun violence. The actions include launching a responsible gun ownership campaign, having the Consumer Product Safety Commission review standards for gun safes and locks, nominating a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and directing the Center for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence. Obama also want to improve incentives and look at removing any unnecessary legal barriers that may prevent states from sharing information with the federal background …
