Volunteer Honored for Fire Prevention Work

The Philadelphia Fire Department recognized Enterprise Fire Co. safety officer Jim Anders Jr. for a decade of volunteer efforts.

In any language, fire safety means having a smoke detector, checking its batteries regularly and knowing how to properly evacuate a building in the event of a fire. For the last decade, Enterprise Fire Co. safety officer Jim Anders Jr. has helped the Philadelphia Fire Department share those and other fire prevention messages through his work with the Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee. A former vice chairman of the committee, the group, with Anders' help, compiled fire prevention calendars, pamphlets, fliers for school-aged children, a fire safety app for iPhones and Android devices and more. Fire Prevention Week Sparks Preparedness

This year's National Fire Protection Association's campaign focuses on protecting the family from home fires.

Every October marks Fire Prevention Month, with the main focus taking place the week of Oct. 9-15. The National Fire Protection Association creates a campaign to help educate families on the dangers of fire and suggests tips on how they can be prevented. Fire Prevention Week was created to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 people without homes, destroyed more than 17,4000 structures throughout Chicago and burned more than 2,000 acres of land, according to the association's educational material.
