Passing Potato Peelers

The Lochel family sold Lochel's Family Restaurant to a pair of brothers, who will keep the eatery's name and menu offerings.

John Lochel may have sold his family-owned restaurant of 10 years, but he’s figured out a way to stay involved in the eatery’s future. “I’m the landlord,” Lochel told Patch during an interview Monday, a few hours prior to the official transfer of Lochel’s Family Restaurant to new owners, Tony Evangelista, 37, of Horsham and his 31-year-old brother, Paul Evangelista, of Abington. The Evangelistas will officially open today as the restaurant’s new owners.  “He’s rooting for me to do well because I pay him every month,” Tony Evangelista quipped. Neither party would release specifics of the lease. But, both sides shared that many things - including the restaurant’s name – will remain unchanged. With the exception of Lochel’s cooks, who will be…

Restructuring Planned for County Economic Development Program

Two Hatboro businesses last year benefitted from low-interest loans as part of the program.

A Montgomery County program that last year began providing low-interest loans to small businesses - including two in Hatboro - will undergo restructuring following the departure of its full-time director, PhillyBurbs.com reports.  Hatboro-based corvette restoration business, Extreme Midyears LLC, as well as the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, both received a $50,000 loan with a 3.25 percent interest rate.  Those loans were funded by the county's seven-year $105 million economic development program, which began in 2008. The county originally budgeted $5 million for each of the first five years, according to the article. Kenneth L. Klothen, the program's full-time director, announced that he will vacate his $78,872-per-year post …

Ollie's Coming to Village Mall

The bargain outlet chain retailer is revamping the former pet store in the Horsham shopping center.

Horsham residents will have the opportunity to buy “good stuff cheap” once the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet store opens in the Village Mall. According to plans filed with the township recently, Ollie’s intends to take over the former 32,000-square-foot space previously occupied by the pet store within the nearly shuttered shopping center, which is located on Blair Mill Road. “The demo work is being done in the building right now,” said George Lisson, Ollie’s manager of new store construction. “We plan to take possession on July 20.” A grand opening is set for Aug. 22, Lisson said. Lisson said 50 to 55 workers would be hired for store setup prior to opening. He said 35 to 40 employees, both full and part-time, would be needed to operate the …

Council OKs New Tonelli’s Location

Owners would like to see the pizza pub open at the site of the former Moon Tavern by Thanksgiving.

It will soon be easier to grab a slice of the “Red and White Wonder” as the Horsham Township Council approved plans for a second Tonelli’s Pizza Pub during Wednesday night’s meeting. The 128-seat restaurant and pub will be situated on Horsham Road near Davis Grove Road at the site of the former Moon Tavern. Plans call for a new entrance, a spruced up façade, additional parking, an expansion of the garage at the rear of the property and the demolition of two homes. At one time, Tonelli's owner Chip Randa had envisioned building a nearly 25,000-square-foot 579-seat "arena" style restaurant.  The $2.7 million construction of the much smaller eatery is expected to begin in two to three months, Randa said and continue for four to six months. …

Knead to Expand

Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA increases reach of Sara Lee sliced bread products.

Consumers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont will be able to discern for themselves if, as the tagline boasts, "nobody doesn't like Sara Lee." Bimbo Bakeries USA, which is headquartered in Horsham Township, announced that Sara Lee's sliced breads will be available in these northeastern states and its existing distribution network in the Mid-Atlantic region - including Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. - would be expanded.  Bimbo Bakeries acquired the Downers Grove, Ill., company in November 2011 and "reformulated" the top-selling recipes, according to a press release issued by Bimbo Bakeries.  “Sara Lee Breads have always had the taste consumers want and …

Winship Wishes to Turn Back Hands of Time

Clock restoration was supposed to be a hobby for Keith Winship, but since it's actually his career, he hopes to restore Hatboro's tower clock.

Clocks ticking, chiming and cuckooing consumes the space of Winships' Pieces of Time store, but owner Keith Winship doesn't hear them anymore. Winship and his mother started the business about 20 years ago, and he and his brother, Brian, work on roughly 150 to 200 clocks at once, so it's not surprising that he can ignore the sound. "We don't even hear it anymore," Winship says with a chuckle. "In fact, we have egg timers placed around the shop [for] when we're testing a clock." They set an egg timer to let them know when a clock they are working on is about to chime, so they can go stand in front of the clock to see if it goes off. The clock business wasn't always on the to do list for Winship or his brother. They grew up working on clocks…

Hatboro Business Organizations to Share Office

The Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce will begin leasing space at borough hall.

Main Street Hatboro and the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce share business-boosting missions - and soon they will share an address. The Hatboro Borough Council this week approved leasing a second floor office space – formerly the fire marshal’s office – to both organizations beginning on May 1. Under the lease agreement, the chamber will pay the borough $300 a month for rent. Main Street Hatboro, which currently rents first floor space in borough hall, will be relocated upstairs on May 1 too. That organization’s rent was also set at $300 per month, but will be waived as an “in-kind donation,” Borough Manager Steven Plaugher said. “We have a strong chamber of commerce and the ability for the chamber to save money in the way of lease …

Revitalization for Village Mall?

Plans have been in the works for some time to renovate the nearly empty Horsham shopping center.

State Rep. Todd Stephens worked in the movie theater as a teenager. Erin Yealy shopped at Bradlees as a Horsham youngster. Doreen Kelly remembers eating pizza at Roman Delight.  Once a busy mall, with plenty of draws – from shopping, to food, entertainment and more – the run-down Village Mall now offers more vacant storefronts than it houses. Currently, Acme and a Dollar Tree are the only open stores at the strip shopping center, which is located on Blair Mill Road and Moreland Avenue in Horsham. “It was such a great mall back then,” Willow Grove resident Sally Hendricks said of the site, which was built in the 1970s. “I so wish someone could do something to bring it back. The location seems good to me and there is great parking - it just …

It's Al Whipplinger. He moved when they decided to "de-mall" the Village Mall. Am I reading this correctly, that they want to turn it back into an indoor mall like it was during its heyday? Unfortunately, I no longer live in the Bucks-Mont area, but would return in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I'm now stuck in the Hershey area.   more ›

New Restaurant, Pizzeria to Open in April

Manja Gourmet is slated to open its doors at the former Quig's Pizza location on April 2.

Come next month, pizza-lovers will have another Hatboro eatery to choose from for the favored Italian staple. Manja Gourmet, a family-owned and operated business, will be located at 332 S. York Road, at the site of the former Quig's Pizza. "We're hopefully opening April 2," co-owner Anastasia Sampaio said. She and her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law will be running Manja Gourmet. The restaurant is undergoing some interior construction, and Sampaio said they can't open until that is finished and until the health department gives the go ahead. The previous restaurant that sat there, Quig's Pizza, closed after back-to-back floods from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, which left the business severely damaged. Though Quig's …

Small Business Boost

Staples is offering five small business owners $50,000 in free advertising.

Creating a buzz. Generating a greater awareness. Expanding a customer base.  Small business owners can get help with all of those things as part of Staples' "Give Your Small Business the Push It Needs" contest in which five small businesses can enter to win up to $50,000 each in free television advertising in their home market.
