Digging for Dinosaurs

Simmons Elementary School second-graders served as paleontologists for the day on the hunt for fossils.

Paintbrush-toting Simmons Elementary School second-graders swept through sandboxes Thursday morning in search of remnants from creatures that walked the earth some 65 million years ago. Dinosaurs. And, with each recovery of a skull, piece of a leg bone and more, their excitement turned to wide-eyed awe at the "discovery" in their hands. Culminating their studies on dinosaurs and fossils, the students got a first-hand look at how the extinct reptiles lived from field paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka during a morning assembly and a subsequent dig. Roberta took time burying the fossils in each group's sandbox to ensure kids would be able to find a piece of history. "We do a lot of glueing," she said of her technique for keeping fossils…

Future of Limekiln Simmons Put on Hold

The school board and Horsham Township Council this week approved extensions to the 20-year-old agreement for the former Simmons Elementary School on Limekiln Pike.

Since the fall of 1992, Hatboro-Horsham School District has had an option agreement with Horsham Township for the "right of first refusal" for the former Simmons Elementary School. The initial five-year agreement for the 10.5-acre parcel now known as Limekiln Simmons School, has been extended several times, including the most recent one-year extension approved Monday by the Hatboro-Horsham School Board and the Horsham Township Council on Wednesday night.  The latest extension continues the option agreement through Aug. 17, 2013. If executed, the contract would allow the township to purchase the Horsham Township property, which is located at 1125 Limekiln Pike, for $1.  The district had been using the building for its special education …

Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Simmons 5th-Graders

Danny Goldsmith, of Warminster, shares what it was like as a child under Nazi reign.

Fifth-graders recently learned what it was like to be a young child living during the Holocaust, after a survivor shared his experience residing in German-occupied Denmark. Danny Goldsmith, of Warminster, spoke to fifth-graders during a recent assembly about his experience as a child of the Holocaust in Europe and the steps he took to survive. Goldsmith was never caught by the Gestapo or was sent to a concentration camp, but had several close encounters with the Nazis. Goldsmith recounted his childhood experience for the audience, explaining that his run from the Nazis began when his father was called to “work” for the Third Reich when he was about 10 years old. At that time, it was not known to Goldsmith that his father was actually being…

'Summer Music at the Hat' Brings Together Area Musicians

Music camp culminates with a free concert on Thursday at Simmons Elementary School.

Hatboro-Horsham School District students and those from surrounding districts have been using the summer months to hone their musical talents. The students are all part of "Summer Band at the Hat," the area's largest and most dynamic music camp. The program features a variety of instruction, for those who have never played an instrument to those who want to learn how to play a second instrument. Some students opt to stay for a full day, while others stay for just a one-hour session. Hatboro-Horsham students attend, as do those from Centennial School District, St. Alphonsus Catholic School, and Calvary Christian Academy. Led by teachers Tim John, John Sedlacsik and Ray Washam, the summer music program provides students with musical …
