Kids' Triathlon Gearing up for Annual Event

Children as young as 6 years old can swim, bike and run their way through the seventh annual 'School's Out Kids' Triathlon' next month in Horsham.

Do your kids have pent up energy to burn? The seventh annual School's Out Kids' Triathlon, which is slated for June 9 at Simmons Elementary School, just might be the perfect cure to quell pre-summertime boredom.  In fact, even a first-grader can do it. The USA Triathlon sanctioned event is intended for kids ages 6 to 14.  "Most kids can do the race without much training at all, and most children end up completing the race in about 20-30 minutes," Race Director Tracy Frary said, adding that the biking portion is "all on closed trails and it’s not very hilly." Bicycling, by far, accounts for the largest portion of the race. Depending upon the kid's age, participants would ride either 2.3 miles or 2.8 miles. Running, in comparison, accounts …

Simmons Elementary Raises 'Family Engagement'

Administrators and staff at Simmons Elementary School have been working for more than a year to spur a more family-centered approach to student success.

Everyone knows about back-to-school night, but what about a night to reflect on the positive outcomes throughout the year? Simmons Elementary School did not have one. Until now. On May 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the school will be open to students and families and the gym will be filled with various physical education activities, according to Simmons Principal Karen Kanter.  In looking at ways to increase "family engagement," Kanter said the school's core group of 12 to 15 staff members worked to help determine the best routes to interactivity.  As a result, Simmons reworked its back-to-school night to make it more interactive for families, Kanter said. In addition, parents, through a survey, shared that "there isn’t an opportunity in the …

Consultant to Seek Advertising at 2 Schools

The Hatboro-Horsham School Board approved hiring two firms to market Hatboro-Horsham High School and Simmons Elementary School and leverage advertising opportunities.

Hatboro-Horsham School District has hired two firms to help mine advertising and corporate sponsorship opportunities at two district schools.  The board on Monday night verbally agreed to hire Advantage 3 to focus its efforts solely on Hatboro-Horsham High School, the stadium and its grounds; and Minnesota-based company School Media to zero in on Simmons Elementary School.  Advertising/sponsorships at the high school The decision followed Bryan McGair of Advantage 3's presentation last month the school board. McGair had said that his 2-year-old company has helped 42 New Jersey and Pennsylvania school districts reap profits through advertising revenue, sponsorships and naming rights. The district would pay Advantage 3 a "one-time" …

Police: Stranded Motorist Prompts School Lockdown

The Horsham Township Police put Simmons Elementary School under a brief lockdown Wednesday morning.

A stranded motorist who "used bad judgement by knocking on car windows" Wednesday morning prompted a 20-minute lockdown at Simmons Elementary School, according to Horsham Police.  The driver was in need of a ride and was making that request of fellow motorists in the area of Keith Valley Road, Horsham Police Lt. Jon Clark told Patch.  As a result, police advised the school at about 8:50 a.m. this morning to go into an "exterior lockdown until the incident was both identified and addressed," according to a notification that Simmons Principal Karen Kanter sent to parents shortly before 10 a.m.  During the lockdown, which lasted about 20 minutes, no one was allowed to enter or leave the building, Kanter wrote, adding that normal school …

Horsham Plans to Freeze for Those in Need

Horsham Township is organizing its first-ever Freezer 5K and one-mile walk for Dec. 16.

Jon Waxman set out to “get the whole community together.” And, by the participation on the organization end of Horsham’s first-ever December 5K, it would seem that Waxman, owner of Lee’s Hoagie House locations in Horsham and Abington, succeeded. “I wanted to get involved with the community,” Waxman told Patch. “I didn’t know what to do.” But, Mark Hudson, Horsham Township’s Parks and Recreation Department director did. “I always wanted to do a 5K, but never knew how to do it,” Hudson said. With insight from Hatboro Area YMCA Executive Director Gary Chamberlain, as well as representatives of Fleet Feet Sports, Horsham is running with its community outreach effort, the Freezer 5K run and one-mile walk. The title of the Dec. 16 event holds a …

Pennypack Power Out, Students Bussed to Simmons

Pennypack Elementary School students will be transported to Simmons Elementary School beginning Monday and until power is restored at the Hatboro school.

PECO has yet to restore power toPennypack Elementary School, Hatboro-Horsham School District officials said, but that doesn't mean students will have another day off. After having the last week off from school in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, students are to report to Pennypack as they normally would on Monday for bussing to Simmons Elementary School in Horsham, Assistant Superintendent Monica Taylor told Patch. Taylor said students will be transported to the Horsham school at 9 a.m. The district prefers that Pennypack parents see that their kids report to that school so the district can uniformly bus kids to Simmons, she said.  If power can be restored in time Sunday, Taylor said Hatboro students would have school at Pennypack, she said…

Miniature Marines Answer Duty's Call

The Horsham-based United Young Marines teaches kids the importance of leadership, teamwork and community service.

“Two lines.” “Weaver, back,” are the commands. A dozen pairs of feet quickly shuffle into the proper formation as all, in unison, stand proudly at attention. The Corporal giving the orders during this roll call stands a few heads shorter than his counterparts and is one of the youngest members of the group. Yet, he is the most senior ranking officer. And, he’s only 11 years old. Dylan Vogel, a Keith Valley Middle School student, has literally been a part of the Horsham-based United Young Marines since the unit’s inception eight years ago. “My mom and dad started it. I was always here, even when I wasn’t in the unit. One day, when I turned 8, I joined,” Dylan said during one of the unit’s regular weekly meetings at Simmons Elementary School…

Simmons Fire Will Not Disrupt School

An after school fire at Simmons Elementary School in Horsham has left an odor throughout the building.

An overheated HVAC motor caused a fire to break out at Simmons Elementary School around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.  The fire was extinguished in less than an hour and no one was injured as a result, according to Horsham Fire Company Chief Tim Flanagan. Students had already departed for the day. Flanagan told Patch that an overheated or "worn out" motor on the school's HVAC system is believed to have been the culprit.  Flanagan said building damage would not require the school to be closed.  "That would be their call," Flanagan said of the district's decision to open Thursday. "It has a little bit of a stink inside." School officials said students will report to school as usual Thursday. Aftercare students will remain outdoors …

Two Simmons Elementary School students received high marks in the school and college ability test from Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

As the school year comes to a close, Zach Shapiro and Colby Brundin are already ahead of the curve.  Way ahead. Zach, a Simmons second-grader, and Colby, a Simmons fifth-grader, have excelled in the School and College Ability Test offered by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.  Zach earned a math score of 463, which is in the 99th percentile and a verbal score of 431, which is in the 70th percentile, while Colby earned a math score of 493, which is in the 96th percentile and a verbal score of 456, which is in the 72nd percentile.  The boys were recognized during Monday night's school board meeting for their achievements.

Math + Crafts + Games + Food = Fun

Simmons Elementary School first- and second-graders tested their fraction, measuring and word problem-solving skills during a Math Camp on Thursday.

Who wouldn't like to eat S'mores for breakfast? Simmons Elementary School first- and second-graders gladly accepted the task Thursday while learning fractions as part of a fun, yet educational Math Camp. The camp, which first-grade teacher Karen Ehling said originated six years ago as a culminating, year-end project shared between 45 students in the two grades, featured eight stations where kids used their math skills to play bingo, craft word problem sticker stories, measure out trail mix and identify two- and three-dimensional shapes.  "It's just sort of a nice way to end the year," said Ehling, checking her timer every so often to alert students to switch to the next station. "It's really just a fun way to do math." Normally, the school…
