The Horsham Township Council held a public hearing Wednesday regarding the Airport Crash and Noise Overlay District, but took no action.
The Horsham Township Council held off on amending the zoning to areas immediately surrounding the runway of shuttered Willow Grove air base. The governing body on Wednesday held a public hearing on the possible elimination of the so-called ACNOD, or Airport Crash and Noise Overlay District. No one from the public commented. Council President Mark McCouch said that the council would consider taking action at a later date. Township Manager Bill Walker told Patch afterward that the council must act within 90 days. If the zoning is lifted, property owners within that district – including those on Keith Valley Road, parts of County Line Road, as well as Commonwealth National Country Club, Valley View Estates, Lakeside Youth Service and Park …

The Horsham Land Reuse Authority acted on 17 notices of interest submitted for various parcels of Willow Grove air base, including roadways that would be extended through the property.
Transportation is king for the Willow Grove air base redevelopment. And, with an airport decidedly out of the picture, the Horsham Land Reuse Authority agreed Wednesday that including other modes of transportation, such as bike trails and roads, is key. The HLRA gave the ok for further consideration to just under half of the 17 notices of interest for various entities looking to acquire land for free or at a dramatically reduced cost. For the most part, that means the HLRA’s consultant, RKG Associates, will incorporate those greenlighted applications into one of three potential redevelopment plans to be presented at the HLRA’s Aug. 17 meeting. “Our approval or acceptance of an NOI provides direction,” HLRA Chairman W. William Whiteside …

In the days leading up to the Horsham Land Reuse Authority's meeting on Wednesday, dozens have flooded e-mail inboxes vying for or against an airport.
Like kids eagerly awaiting the holidays, the wish lists are pouring in. The item on everyone’s list – whether for or against – is an airport. And to prove their points, airport proponents and opponents alike are flooding e-mail inboxes. All in an attempt to have their voices heard and their wish met, dozens have sent letters in the last week alone to the Horsham Land Reuse Authority, copying Montgomery County Commissioners, Bucks County Commissioners and elected officials neighboring Horsham Township where the 1,100-acre Willow Grove air base is located. But, unlike Santa Claus, the HLRA – the entity charged with finally ending the airport versus no airport decision - likely won’t answer everyone’s wish when, on Wednesday, the board …

The board, at Wednesday's meeting, will weigh in on each of the 17 notices of interest submitted.
Whether or not plans for an airport at Willow Grove air base advance, or are grounded for good will be decided at Wednesday’s Horsham Land Reuse Authority meeting. For the first time in the HLRA’s nearly six years of existence, the board will take action on specific applications pertaining to the redevelopment of 892 acres of the sprawling, 1,100-acre air base. Namely, the board will render a decision on each of the 17 notices of interest – including two for an airport – that were submitted in March, HLRA Executive Director Mike McGee said. McGee said the board will take a vote on each so-called public benefit conveyance for various requests including park land, road access through the base, educational facilities, daycare centers and …

Council passes resolution contesting runway use at Willow Grove air base.
The Hatboro Borough Council this week joined several other local entities that have spoken out against the continued use of the runway at Willow Grove air base. The council voted 4-2 Monday to approve a resolution opposing plans that could allow for continued use of the air base's 8,000-foot runway. Councilman John Zygmont was not present. Hatboro Borough Council has now joined the governments of Horsham, Warminster and Montgomery townships, along with the Hatboro-Horsham School District, in opposing plans submitted by the Bucks County Airport Authority and Montgomery County. The issue drew no public comment at the meeting. Council president Marianne Reymer and Councilman Bill Tompkins voted against the resolution. At its previous meeting…

Hatboro officials will consider a resolution opposing future runway use at Willow Grove air base.
Hatboro officials may join the growing list of neighboring municipalities that have banded together to oppose future flights at Willow Grove Naval Air Station. At its committee meeting Monday, the council, at the request of Hatboro-Horsham School Board, discussed the possibility of adopting a resolution similar to one adopted recently by the school board, Horsham, Warminster and Montgomery Township officials to oppose airport use.Montgomery County, as well as the Bucks County Airport Authority have submitted applications for use of the base's 8,000-foot-long runway. The Hatboro council directed its solicitor, Michael Savona, to draft a resolution to be considered at the June 20 meeting, but not before discussing whether Hatboro should …

Warminster and Montgomery Township officials approved resolutions supporting Horsham's effort to permanently shut down the air base's runway, but most municipalities are simply watching.
As Horsham Township continues to push to permanently close the runway at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, most nearby communities are simply taking a wait-and-see approach. Montgomery Township officials passed a resolution backing Horsham in its anti-airport stance and Warminster’s Board of Supervisors took a similar approach on March 24, voting 4-0 on a resolution supporting the elected officials' desire to keep the runway closed. After some back and forth between Warminster Supervisors Frank Feinberg and Tom Panzer over the value of the runway for the community, the panel, minus an absent Gail Johnson, ultimately agreed that Horsham deserved the township’s full support. “I’m not going to tell them that they need …

The council moves forward with plans to acquire roads bordering air base
Although it ultimately has no say in the redevelopment of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, the Horsham Township Council formalized its opposition of continued use of the site’s runway. On Monday, the governing body, following a lengthy public comment session from a handful of the approximate 40 people in attendance, approved a resolution expressing the council’s disfavor for “any aviation” use on the 8,000-foot runway, which is situated in the sprawling 1,100-acre parcel. During the public comment session, which was peppered with lots of community questions regarding Montgomery County, as well as Bucks County Airport Authority’s applications for use of the runway, Council President Mark McCouch urged residents to …

Hatboro Mike, you do raise valid points. And as another person commented back to me on the sister article by Theresa, it is by a technicality I live on the other side of County Line Road. So even though my back yard is literally at the base, I don't have much of a say since I don't even live in Montgomery County. As I said in a comment in the other article, I would hear the drone of the turbo-…   more ›
