The over-parked lot at Penn Mutual Life Insurance in Horsham may pose hazards, officials said.
The 540 parking spaces for 700 Penn Mutual employees in Horsham are not adequate. And it shows. "You can see cars parked on the grass," Horsham Township Manager Bill Walker said. "You can see cars parked in the aisles." In the event of a fire or other emergency, Walker said a fire truck might have difficulty navigating around the over-parked lot. Penn Mutual representatives came before the Horsham Township Council this week to present a plan aimed at fixing the overcrowded lot. Under the plan, the company would add 96 additional parking spaces and add stormwater management features for better flood prevention on the Dresher Road property. The governing body took no action. Penn Mutual donated the money to a local college to help train veterans for financial industry careers.
In an atrium packed with employees and military, Eileen McDonnell, president and CEO of Penn Mutual, announced the Horsham-based company will be donating $2.5 million over five years to help establish a Center for Veterans Affairs at the American College in Bryn Mawr. The announcement - which took place at a monthly recognition event meant to honor employee Andrew Lamarra, who served with the 111th Fighter Wing and 379th Air Expeditionary Wing in Qatar and Afghanistan - was met with cheers and applause. Doylestown resident Eileen McDonnell will soon be one of Horsham's newest CEOs and the first woman CEO in Penn Mutual's history.
As Penn Mutual President Eileen McDonnell steps into her new role as chief executive officer later this month, she’ll focus on steering the 163-year-old firm well into the future. Horsham-based Penn Mutual was founded in 1847 and has a long, rich history in the Greater Philadelphia area, according to McDonnell, who as the company’s first female CEO, is preparing for the company’s 200th anniversary in 2047. “We make long-term promises and commitments to (our clients) that may not see a benefit for 20, 40, 50 years,” McDonnell said. “The decisions I make today very much impact out that length of time.” The Doylestown resident will replace Robert Chappell, who will step down on Feb. 18 after serving as Penn Mutual CEO for 16 years.
