Hatboro-Horsham Students Claim Top Art Honors

Two Hatboro-Horsham High School students earned awards in the 26th annual 'Touch the Future' art exhibition.

An awards ceremony was recently held at Arcadia University to celebrate the winners of the 26th annual “Touch the Future” art show, including two Hatboro-Horsham High School students. Students from 27 Bucks and Montgomery county public high schools submitted artwork to the professionally juried show, which began as a tribute to Christa McAuliffe, NASA’s teacher in space who died aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Locally, the following Hatboro-Horsham students won: (Instructor Lauren Economou) (Instructor Lauren Economou) Three best of show winners were chosen along with 14 category winners, three PSEA purchase prize winners, and a juror’s prize winner from the approximately 300 pieces of artwork submitted by teachers throughout Bucks …

NASA: World Won't End Tomorrow

Some say the ancient Mayans predicted the world will end Dec. 21; others say you should plan on going to work Friday anyway.

It may be inevitable that one of the many doomsday predictions found in cults or New Age mythologies may actually come true, but it's probably not Friday. Some believe that when the 5,125-year ancient Mayan calendar runs out on Dec. 21, it determines the end of the world. NASA scientists disagree.  According to the NASA website, the only thing that will happen on Dec. 21 is the winter solstice.  The website also compared the lack of dates on the Mayan calendar to the lack of dates on current calendars. "Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your …

New NASA Video of Earth at Night

City lights show humanity's spread across the planet's surface from hundreds of miles up.

A new video released Wednesday by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) offers an unprecedented look of the entirety of the Earth's nighttime surface as seen from outer space. The 30-second video stitches together 2.5 terabytes of image data taken during 312 orbits of the planet by NASA's Suomi NPP satellite, which was launched in October 2011. The video opens with a view of the Asia-Pacific rim, with the city lights of Japan and the heavily populated areas of China's coastal regions near the center of the frame. The Earth's rotation then brings the lights of the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East into view, followed by Europe and the mostly-dark continent of Africa. Finally, the Americas rotate into view…

The Search for Other Earths

NASA’s Kepler mission’s goal is to conclusively find other habitable planets in our galaxy.

If you are a Star Wars or Star Trek fan, like me, then you are aware that there seems to be an abundance of habitable planets loaded with humanoid species out there in the cosmos. NASA’s new Kepler mission, NASA Discovery mission No. 10, is out to determine if that is the case. According to NASA, there is clear evidence that there are substantial numbers of three types of exoplanets, or planets outside of our solar system. For our purposes of finding extraterrestrial life, it is important to find the fourth type of exoplanet, those that orbit in the “goldilocks” or habitable zone. It can be said that our Earth orbits in a zone like this. It isn’t too hot and isn’t too cold. We orbit at a distance from the Sun to allow for water to remain …
