Revitalization for Village Mall?

Plans have been in the works for some time to renovate the nearly empty Horsham shopping center.

State Rep. Todd Stephens worked in the movie theater as a teenager. Erin Yealy shopped at Bradlees as a Horsham youngster. Doreen Kelly remembers eating pizza at Roman Delight.  Once a busy mall, with plenty of draws – from shopping, to food, entertainment and more – the run-down Village Mall now offers more vacant storefronts than it houses. Currently, Acme and a Dollar Tree are the only open stores at the strip shopping center, which is located on Blair Mill Road and Moreland Avenue in Horsham. “It was such a great mall back then,” Willow Grove resident Sally Hendricks said of the site, which was built in the 1970s. “I so wish someone could do something to bring it back. The location seems good to me and there is great parking - it just …

It's Al Whipplinger. He moved when they decided to "de-mall" the Village Mall. Am I reading this correctly, that they want to turn it back into an indoor mall like it was during its heyday? Unfortunately, I no longer live in the Bucks-Mont area, but would return in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I'm now stuck in the Hershey area.   more ›

Hatboro Pediatrician Hopes to Watch 'Em All Grow Up

Dr. Jennifer Coren, a mother of four, left her previous practice in favor of a personalized approach.

Growth is so important to Dr. Jennifer Coren. The kind of growth one would mark on a growth chart as opposed to a business environment where more employees are added. Perhaps an oxymoron of sorts, Coren, a mother of four kids ranging in age from 1 to 9, is interested in almost no growth from a business standpoint. Instead, she would rather see that individualized growth which varies from one child to the next. A never-ending smile graces her youthful face as she talks about those important milestones in a child’s life – not just her kids, but her patients as well. Breastfeeding. Starting solid foods. Well exams. Bonding over a stethoscope in cozy, colorful exam rooms that look nothing like a typical doctor’s office. Coren wants to do it …

H-H Looks to Make Sports Programs a Win

The school district has assembled a steering committee to review existing athletics offerings and recommend improvements.

In an effort to improve upon an already stellar athletics program, the Hatboro-Horsham School District is embarking on a comprehensive sports program review, administrators announced during Monday’s board meeting. Athletic Director Lou James said after the meeting that he could not pinpoint a driver for the review and potential adjustments. “It’s just a basic review to make things better,” James said. “We just want to be the cream of the crop.” The plan is not to add additional sports, James said, noting that at 13 boys and 13 girls sports, the program is “pretty well capped out.” Instead, John Nodecker, assistant superintendent - a former athletic director, coach and athlete - said the no-cost review and possible program implementation is…

Parent Group Becomes Part of the 'Conversation'

The 'Parent Partnership' is part of the district's new anti-substance abuse program.

More than a dozen parents came out to Hatboro-Horsham School Distirict’s first Parent Partnership meeting at the Horsham Library Thursday evening. The meetings are part of the district’s "Be a Part of the Conversation" program that started earlier this year. The goal of the program is to raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse in the Hatboro and Horsham communities. “Our goal here is to raise awareness and educate parents,” said Kim Rubenstein, who is the parent liaison for the group. “Supportive families are the key to getting someone ahead of abuse.” The Parent Partnership group won’t just tackle the issue of drug and alcohol abuse. “We are going to discuss other risky behaviors, like 'sexting,' ” Rubenstein said.   Discussions that…

Horsham Welcomes New Police Officer

Joseph Rivera will fill the void left following Detective John Austin's retirement in March.

Joseph Rivera spent four years serving his country – including a year in Iraq – and beginning Tuesday he will serve the community he’s called home for the last eight years. Rivera, 32, was sworn in during Wednesday night’s township council meeting as Horsham Township Police Department’s newest officer. Rivera’s family and many of the department’s 39-member police force filled council chambers. “As you can see, we have a pretty big family,” Police Chief Robert Ruxton said, gesturing to the uniformed officers present. “We all look out for each other." Starting next week, Rivera, who had worked part-time for the last three years as a police officer in Jenkintown and West Conshohocken, will begin looking out for fellow police officers and the …

Flood-Ravaged Community Demands Help from Hatboro Government

Officials say they plan to coordinate with state and federal agencies and will revisit a flood damage inventory and DEP study, which has stalled for the last several months.

Spurred by two recent devastating storms and subsequent flooding, about 60 Hatboro residents filled the Hatboro Borough Council meeting Monday night in an attempt to get answers. The sometimes-heated question-and-answer session with the governing body may have resulted in more questions than answers. Would Hatboro be declared a federal disaster site? If so, when would that happen? What help is offered for residents – particularly those from the oft-flooded Woodwinds community – as they are forced to rebuild again? Could homes that sustained significant flood damage be purchased by the federal government, as officials had suggested? And, perhaps the million dollar question: What’s being done to stop the overflow of water from Pennypack …
