Shorter class periods at Keith Valley Middle School are expected to help with the district's staffing reductions.
Good-bye semester-long courses. Hello shorter classes taught the entire school year. Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, Keith Valley Middle School students will have 60-minute instructional periods for English/language arts, math, science and social studies instead of the current 84-minute classes. Currently, students take a semester's worth of science and social studies courses. But, as part of the change approved during Monday night's school board meeting, middle schoolers will take all of those courses during the school year. Keith Valley administrators had recommended the schedule change during a board meeting in March. At that time, officials had said that the new schedule would allow for more "inter-disciplinary work." In a …

Hatboro-Horsham School District is considering a proposed schedule change beginning next school year at Keith Valley Middle School.
Shorter classes, but more of them. That's the gist of a class schedule proposal for next year at Keith Valley Middle School. In an attempt to become "more efficient and focused on the whole child," Keith Valley Principal Jon Kircher and fellow middle school administrators have asked the Hatboro-Horsham School Board to consider shifting from a semester to a full year of science and social studies classes. The change, if enacted, would mean that students would have four 60-minute "core classes" instead of three 80-minute classes each day and all year, according to KV Assistant Principal Joseph Devine. "We increase the opportunity for inter-disciplinary work," Devine said during Monday's school board meeting. Under the suggested schedule …

With sticks in hand, Keith Valley Middle School students accept the challenge of playing floor hockey for a 17-hour marathon Friday through Saturday morning.
With hockey sticks in hand, Keith Valley Middle School eighth-graders carried on the annual tradition Friday afternoon of playing floor hockey for 17 hours as part of the school's annual Keith Valley Challenge. The goal - besides scoring points - is to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to children who have life-threatening illnesses. This year's event raised $49,687, meaning students succeeded in beating last year's $48,478. Throughout its 36-year history, the KV Challenge has raised $781,414 for various charities. The event began in 1977 when a Keith Valley student died of a rare congenital heart defect. In his memory, the administration, staff and eighth-grade students organized the hockey …

Band-Aid fixes planned as Hatboro-Horsham School District awaits the transfer of Willow Grove air base from the federal government to local ownership.
If Willow Grove air base takes the projected 20 to 30 years to redevelop "that would be a problem" for Hatboro-Horsham School District's future middle school, according to a district official. The aging Keith Valley Middle School will remain "functionally sound" with minor improvements and modifications for the next seven to 10 years, according to Bob Reichert, the district's director of business affairs. According to a capital projects update presented during Monday night's school board work session, the district recently carried out $117,000 in improvements at Keith Valley, including the $10,000 rebuild of a baseball field and an $80,000 cost to replace carpeting. For 2013-2014, roughly $800,000 in maintenance is planned, including the…

The seventh annual Main Street Hatboro Model Train Show boasts more vendors, more space and more trains.
Like Al Zollers’ love of trains, the annual Hatboro Model Train Show has grown over the years. “It’s bigger this year,” said Zollers, a lifelong train enthusiast and organizer for the seventh annual event, which takes place Saturday. “We have more displays and bigger displays … We have more vendors this year than we’ve ever had.” In all, Zollers said 47 vendors – who purchased space at more than 100 tables – will be exhibiting and selling their train-related wares. The space at Keith Valley Middle School has grown from the cafeteria to include the gymnasium as well, Zollers said. “We expect everything to be bigger this year,” he said of the event, which drew more than 500 people last year. Hatboro’s WRDV FM 89.3 will be broadcasting live …

'Up to four' Keith Valley Middle School students' photos were uploaded without permission to a Web site described by an administrator as being 'racy.'
Hatboro-Horsham School District and the Horsham Police are investigating how a handful of Keith Valley Middle School students' photos turned up on a Web site, an official told Patch. "Up to four" students had their photos uploaded - without their permission - to the Web site, which Assistant Superintendent John Nodecker described as being in "no way pornographic," but "racy." Nodecker declined to share the name of the Web site and he said he did not know which grades the impacted students were in. According to Nodecker, the Keith Valley students were included on the site, along with a "number" of other area middle schools. Nodecker said "there may be more" Keith Valley students whose photos were uploaded without permission. The uploaded …

Keith Valley Middle School students and faculty donned black on Wednesday in tribute to the widespread power outages and ongoing struggles for Hurricane Sandy victims in New York.
Never has it been cooler to wear black. And Brenna Reilley went all out in her head-to-toe black hair accessories, shirt, pants and even football player markings under her eyes. "Me and my friend, we both wanted to dress up," said Brenna, a Keith Valley Middle School eighth-grader. Dressing all in black, had a purpose beyond, well, dressing all in black, according to Assistant Principal Sarah Stout. The intent of "Blackout Wednesday" was to fundraise for Hurricane Sandy victims in New York. A Keith Valley art teacher designed the black-and-white "Hatters Help" T-shirts that faculty and a few students bought and wore on Wednesday. At $10 per shirt and close to 400 sold, Stout estimated that the school raised close to $4,000 - minus costs - …

Two fires are believed to have been set outside of two Horsham homes in the early morning hours Tuesday.
Jean DeNardo woke to the sound of rain beating on her window early Tuesday morning. Those soothing sounds soon changed to fear as a "popping noise" literally ignited her backyard shed. "I looked out the window and there was this orange glow," said DeNardo, of Moonflower Road in Horsham. "It went up like a matchbox." The fire in DeNardo's shed, which backs up to Meetinghouse Road, began at about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, less than 10 minutes after Horsham Township Police and the Horsham Fire Company responded to a "suspicious" 2:51 a.m. fire outside a home in the area of Meetinghouse and County Line roads. No one was injured in either of the fires, according to Horsham Township Fire Marshal George Fida. Both blazes are under investigation, he…

This is the first year that test results went down so your theory doesn't really work that it was due to block scheduling. I have had 2 children graduate from HHHS. They thrived with the block scheduling. With block scheduling, comes a larger work load/more homework daily than with a traditional schedule. This prepared them well for college.   more ›
