'Challenge' Accepted

Keith Valley Middle School eighth-graders are playing hockey for 17 hours to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The first puck dropped in the gym of Keith Valley Middle School at 3 p.m. Friday and the last game of hockey isn't expected to end until Saturday at 7 a.m. This year, the school's eighth-graders, who are broken up into 26 teams, raised about $48,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The organization grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. The students, many of whom painted their faces and decorated their team shirts, are expecting to stay up all night to participate in the Keith Valley Challenge hockey marathon with their peers. The event was started 35 years ago by the school's staff and student body after a student died from a rare heart defect. Last year, the school raised a record $53,000 and funded several wishes.
