10 Days to Celebrate July 4th in Philly

Events include history, film, music and more under one Independence Day umbrella.

If there is any American town that would know something about Independence Day, it would have to be Philadelphia. So it isn't surprising that this city has scheduled 10 days worth of attractions to celebrate the Fourth of July. Elizabeth Evans, spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Wawa Welcome America event, said the multiple-day activities - which span June 25 through July 4 - is "the nation’s largest, free July Fourth festival in the heart of America's birthplace.” “There's no other place nationwide where families can experience the 'largest free concert in America'; two breathtaking fireworks displays; a 'Go 4th and Learn' series offering free educational and interactive programs for young children and their parents; a day-long 'Party on …

Montco Mommy

A Holiday for Relaxing with Family

For this mommy, there's nothing like stretching out on a blanket and watching fireworks.

I love the Fourth of July. It is my favorite holiday. Why? Because, I believe, it is so simple. I wouldn’t call myself overly patriotic. I mean, I love my country, and I admire all of the amazing people that make it what it is. But, I wouldn’t say it is the day’s actual purpose that makes me love it. Instead, I think it is nearly the only holiday, all year long, that we get to spend as a family, but not have to do anything besides relax. There’s the food for example. There is no major meal that has to be prepared. Sure, some neighborhood barbecues might come to pass, but that’s just for fun. There is no family obligation involved. You can just grill up a burger or a dog, and you’re ready to go. This mommy will take a hot dog and a cold …

Keep Your Pets Fireworks-Free This Weekend

Loud noises and bright light can cause panic for many animals.

Along with plans to celebrate our nation's birthday, this holiday weekend can be a terrifying one for our animal companions. Both dogs and cats can become distressed from the added commotion and noise from fireworks and celebrations. “Animals are more sensitive to sound and they react with a fight or flight response,” said Erika Floyd of Hatboro, owner of Passionate 4 People and Pets. Floyd said we never know how a dog will react to fireworks. In an otherwise calm animal, the loud noise and flashing lights could cause extreme behavior. A dog that is new to your family, Floyd said, might be even more afraid. She said that while we want to include our pets in this holiday celebration, it is best to leave them home where they feel safe and …

Friendly Reminder: Fireworks are Illegal

District attorney, sheriff ask public to leave fireworks displays to professionals

The staccato pops of strings of firecrackers are already audible throughout many neighborhoods in Hatboro and Horsham, but county officials want to remind you: they are against the law. Firecrackers, along with "pinwheels, torpedoes, jumping jacks, skyrockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial fireworks, blockbusters and cherry bombs," are illegal fireworks under the state's Health and Safety Act, the district attorney's office said in a press release. "Anyone who uses, sells or transports these materials without the appropriate permit is subject to arrest on charges of illegal transportation of explosive devices, risking a catastrophe, arson, assault and other charges stemming from the use of fireworks," the statement said. The …
