Pennypack Power Restored

Pennypack Elementary School students will return to the Hatboro school on Wednesday.

Pennypack Elementary School students will return to their normal classrooms on Wednesday after a lengthy power outage forced them out of that school for the last week and a half. Power was restored to the Hatboro school Monday afternoon, according to Hatboro-Horsham School District Superintendent Curtis Griffin.  "We are currently bringing all the systems on line and are planning for a normal opening on Wednesday," Griffin told Patch.  Hatboro-Horsham schools have an inservice day on Tuesday to accommodate Election Day voting, he said.  The district returned most of its students to school on Nov. 1. After power remained out Sunday, the district put in place a plan to transport Pennypack students to Simmons Elementary School in Horsham on …

Elections 2012

Beware: Robo-call Says Election is Wednesday

Across the country people receive a false robo-call saying the date of the presidential election was changed due to Hurricane Sandy.

Mark Schultz was "a little dumbstruck," but not surprised when he received a robo-call at his house in Holliston, Massachusetts Saturday around noon. The call said "Hi, I'm one of your neighbors in Holliston and ... I want to urge you to vote for Elizabeth Warren and Barack Obama on Wednesday, November 7." The date, said the call, had been changed because of Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully the Democratic Town Committee member knew this information was incorrect, but he posted to Facebook to make sure others knew the same. The caller ID listed it as Massachusetts 000-0000.  The registered Democrat said he has heard of this happening around the country, but not in this area. "It's a new low in campaigning," he said, adding, "I don't know who it …

What if Sandy Hit on Election Day?

Hurricane Sandy, one week later, would have caused election chaos.

By Eric Boehm | PA Independent HARRISBURG — More than 250 of Pennsylvania‘s roughly 9,000 polling places were still without power Friday morning, creating a challenge for election officials as Election Day approaches. Gov. Tom Corbett on Tuesday said he was ordering the Public Utility Commission to tell power companies that polling places should be given priority for restorations. Power companies in eastern Pennsylvania, where most of the outages remain, say they expect power to be restored by Monday at the latest. Superstorm Sandy that struck Pennsylvania and the rest of the Northeast earlier this week presented a political challenge to candidates and a practical challenge to the state officials responsible for conducting next week’s …

Power Update: 90% Restored; 16,337 to Go

Utility companies are predicting all, or most, of Montgomery County will restored to power by midnight tonight.

On Saturday, local utility companies restored power to about 25,000 customers, but they still have more than 16,000 to go. In a press release Saturday night, PECO reported that 15,000 customers remained without power in Montgomery County. PPL had 1,190 and Met-Ed stated it had only 147 customers still in the dark. Are you one of the last 16,000? How have you been coping? In Montgomery County, Cheltenham, Abington, Upper Moreland, Lower Merion, and Plymouth, townships are the areas most impacted by power outages. PECO expects most of the remaining customers to have service restored by Sunday midnight.  “I want to thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we continue to focus on safely restoring service across the region,” …

40,785 in Montgomery County Remain Without Power

PECO reports it has restored power to more than 725,000 customers affected by Hurricane Sandy.

In the most recent PECO update, from Friday afternoon, PECO reports about 125,000 customers still without power: “This is the worst damage I have ever seen,” said Pat O’Neil, a 25-year PECO veteran supervisor who has been working 16-hour shifts to restore service since the beginning of the storm.  “Many of the areas we are working in had significant damage, including multiple downed trees and poles, downed wires, and damaged equipment.  In some of these areas, we need to completely rebuild the electric distribution system and supporting infrastructure to restore service to our customers.” PPL reports 2,062 customers without power mostly in Upper Hanover, Franconia and Hatfield in Montgomery County. Met Ed has 723 customers out in …

Corbett: No Insurance Deductibles Will be Applied to Sandy Damage

Governor Tom Corbett advised insurance companies that deductibles, which can be up to five percent of the insured value of a home, should not be applied to any Hurricane Sandy homeowner insurance claims.

Below is a press release from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department: Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett today announced that Pennsylvania homeowners will not have to pay hurricane deductibles on insurance claims stemming from damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. “Insurance deductibles could have added significant costs to Pennsylvanians already struggling to clean up and rebuild after Hurricane Sandy,” Corbett said. “Insurance companies have deployed catastrophe teams to Pennsylvania and they have been advised that hurricane deductibles should not be applied to any homeowner’s insurance claims.” Some homeowner’s insurance policies for properties in Pennsylvania have special “hurricane,” “tropical storm” or “named storm” deductibles based on a…

More Than Half of Horsham Still Without Power

Hurricane Sandy has left lasting impacts on Horsham Township in terms of destruction and power outages.

Horsham Township residents have taken to powering up laptops and electronics in eateries, at fitness clubs and libraries and refueling their bodies at various spots in town. The powerlessness for many continues. As of 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, 56 percent of township households - 6,115 - remained without power, according to Horsham Township Manager Bill Walker. That's 21 percent drop from the 77 percent without power on Tuesday, but a far cry from being back on the grid. By Thursday at 7:30 a.m., Walker said 4,656 PECO customers in Horsham were without power, which is 43 percent of township households. Gov. Tom Corbett and a representative from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency toured Horsham and Ambler Wednesday morning along with …
