The Hatboro-Horsham School District is discussing with Hatboro and Horsham police departments the possibility of adding school resource officers.
Against the backdrop of a projected school tax increase and a staffing reduction, the Hatboro-Horsham School District is looking at ways to pay for the addition of armed police as "another layer of safety and security" at district schools. The so-called school resource officer, if the district and Hatboro and Horsham opt to hire such a police officer (or officers) to patrol schools, could start as early as next school year. But, before then, administrators and municipal officials must find ways to pay for the additional salary. Do you think school resource officers or armed police should be hired for Hatboro-Horsham schools? If so, who should pay their salaries and benefits? One possibility that the Hatboro Borough Council is actively …

Colleen Troxel was sworn in Wednesday as Horsham's first-ever police administrator.
Colleen Troxel is one of the elite. Troxel, a Horsham Township police officer since 1999, made history Wednesday night when she was sworn in as the first female police administrator in the township’s history. “To rise up through the ranks is important,” said Troxel, who was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant. Raised by her father, Larry Gerrard, a now-retired Philadelphia homicide cop, Troxel said she followed in his and her older brother’s law enforcement footsteps. Both were in attendance at the Horsham Township Council meeting Wednesday to congratulate Troxel in her history-making event. “I’m thrilled,” Gerrard told Patch. “She’s good at what she does.” Other police and township officials would agree. In April 2011, Troxel was one of…

A 'person of interest' who allegedly fled the scene of an auto accident in Horsham is under investigation, according to police.
Horsham Police are investigating the cause of a Friday night one-vehicle crash, which sent three occupants to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police. Horsham Deputy Chief Bill Daly said the 8:25 p.m. crash occurred on Horsham Road near Precision Drive. According to Daly, a black 2004 Lincoln Continental flipped over and struck a tree. As a result, three occupants were transported to Abington Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. One of the vehicle's occupants, according to police, fled the scene on foot. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, as is the "person of interest" that Daly said fled the scene. Hatboro-Horsham School District said that the person or persons responsible for the dissemination of GPA and class rank information has been 'adjudicated through the Montgomery County Juvenile Court system in a manor we believe to be fair and just.'
The mystery about how Hatboro-Horsham High School students' grade point averages and class rank information was obtained and shared with fellow students has been solved. However, district officials are keeping mum on who is responsible for the information leak and the punishments levied against the person or persons. In a statement released to the media on Tuesday morning, the district announced the "successful conclusion" to a nearly seven-month-long investigation into the release of the information, but said the district would not release the name, grade or "any other identifying information of anyone charged in this matter." "Hatboro-Horsham also will not be releasing if the district took any kind of disciplinary action against those …

Police responded to Hunt Drive for reports of shots fired shortly after 10 a.m.
The gunshots residents of Hunt Drive in Horsham heard and subsequently called into police Tuesday morning were most likely blanks fired to scare geese off from one of the two nearby golf clubs, police said. A police official said the golf courses are known to use "goose guns." The guns are often modified or specially produced weapons that fire blanks and cause a loud gunshot-like noise in an effort to scare off the geese that can damage the turf. When the call came in shortly after 10 a.m., police from the township's patrol unit responded to the neighborhood and searched the surrounding area on foot. The officers found nothing in the neighborhood that indicated nefarious activity, the official said. By 11 a.m. police were cleared from the …

Enforcement of the new law will start on Thursday.
Starting Thursday, March 8, Hatboro and Horsham police - along with officers across the state - will begin enforcing Pennsylvania's new law prohibiting text-based communication while operating a motor vehicle. The law, which makes text-based communications while driving a primary offense carrying a $50 fine, will take effect one minute after midnight on Thursday, according to a PennDOT press release. “This law is one of those things that can prevent a tragedy,” Horsham Police Department Lt. Jon Clark said. Clark said text-based communication while driving is widespread and has lead to several accidents in Horsham over the past several years. The problem is so serious that a study conducted by the University of North Texas Health Science …

Arm some teachers. Though I understand that given today's student there may be more shootings. Really though, any armed or unarmed security would be targeted first. The best defense would be teachers who are armed and trained to respond quickly and effieciently to an attack. I don't think having armed guards would have a good effect on learning. Many who see the gun as the problem will never …   more ›
