'School Counts' Puts Students on Employment Fast Track

Hatboro-Horsham High School is piloting a program that offers credentialing of prospective student employees and gives those who meet requirements guaranteed job interviews.

Did you ever think that an employee or a co-worker looked good on paper, but fell short in the workplace? Hatboro-Horsham High School, in conjunction with the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce, is working to offer some assurances along with prospective student employees’ paper.  Dubbed “School Counts,” a new pilot program rolled out last month offers a screening process of sorts which takes into account eligible students’ grades, character, responsibility, attendance and basic workplace skills, according to Sue Fox, the high school’s community-based learning coordinator. “For the employer it’s a win-win,” Fox said. “It helps them with the employment process. They have a kid who’s vetted through…

Meet, Mingle, Mardi Gras

Horsham officials hope to bring the community together with zydeco music, Cajun-inspired food and camraderie.

Sometimes we become better acquainted with our neighbors on vacation than we do the folks who have lived three doors down from us for years, mused Horsham Township Police Chief Robert Ruxton. "Let's get to know everybody," Ruxton urged about 100 Horsham-area business owners during a luncheon last month. That may be easier with the upcoming Mardi Gras event, which is being put on with collaboration from Ruxton, Horsham Township and the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce.        The evening of music, food and fun is designed to bring together everyone with a stake in Horsham. “People have lived and worked in the township for years and have never met those who keep Horsham running,” said Ruxton in a press release. Ruxton and his wife, Mary …

Horsham Chamber on the Move

Beginning Feb. 1, the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce will rent office space in the township's community center.

Good-bye Days Inn. Hello community center. As of Feb. 1, the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce is changing its address – to that of the Horsham Township Municipal Complex. The Horsham Township Council, during its meeting Monday, approved an agreement with the Chamber to permit the rental of office space within the township’s community center. According to Township Manager Bill Walker, the Chamber will pay the township $500 per month for what had been previously used as space for the recreation department and later as temporary office for State Rep. Todd Stephens of Horsham. Parks and recreation vacated the community center space after the police department moved from the township building into its own separate building, Walker said. “The…

Township Manager: Horsham in Good Shape Despite Recession

Bill Walker gave the annual "State of Horsham" address Wednesday afternoon during the Greater Chamber of Commerce's annual luncheon.

Easing traffic, boosting business and redeveloping the shuttered Willow Grove air base – while keeping taxes flat – were agenda items for Horsham’s future as Township Manager Bill Walker presented the annual “State of Horsham” Wednesday afternoon. “(Traffic) is our No. 1 priority in Horsham,” Walker told the crowd of more than 100 gathered for the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “If you can’t move, you have issues and it affects jobs, it affects businesses, it affects people’s attitudes.” Key in improving transportation infrastructure and helping traffic flow better is to continue with public/private partnerships, Walker said. In the short-term, Walker said a designated left lane would be added at Gibraltar and Dresher roads…

John, excellent comment. Lot's of thought went into it. Look at the history. Only one tax hike since 1989. Not a bad record. And the small tax increase is being used to payoff the debt incurred to build a much needed and well used library next to Simmons Elementary and Hatboro-Horsham High School.   more ›
