If you've served jury duty in Montgomery County, there's a pretty good chance you've met long-time Montgomery County Judge Arthur Tilson. He speaks to most all jurors before selections begin. Tilson, however, may sit on the other side of the courtroom come May. Tilson is taking Gov. Tom Corbett to court over a "retirement mandate," according to PennLive.com. "They are arguing that it violates their civil rights under the U.S. and state constitutions," said PennLive.com. "Last week, the state Supreme Court agreed to hear and fast-track one of those cases filed by [Tilson]. The state's highest court is to hear arguments on the Tilson case in May." A federal judge is allowing the Pennsylvania Supreme Court the first hearing to decide "…

As proposed, Gov. Tom Corbett's state budget would close an estimated $650K in Hatboro-Horsham School District's deficit.
If Gov. Tom Corbett's $28.4 billion budget moves forward as introduced, it would cut Hatboro-Horsham School District's budget shortfall for its 2013-14 spending plan in half, a district official told Patch. With a 1.7 percent tax increase figured in for the upcoming school district budget, Hatboro-Horsham is still facing a $1.3 million budget shortfall. Without a tax increase, the deficit is about $2.2 million, district officials reported last month. However, Corbett's budget—at least in the early version released Tuesday—would help to lessen the gap, Bob Reichert, Hatboro-Horsham School District's director of business affairs told Patch. "If the governor’s budget was approved as currently proposed, I estimate that it would reduce our …

'We've been very fortunate' compared to New Jersey, New York.
Following a visit to eastern Montgomery County on Wednesday, Gov. Tom Corbett on Thursday visited the operation center of the county's Department of Public Safety. He toured the facility where 9-1-1 dispatchers coordinated the county's emergency responders and an adjacent room that had been converted into a command center for other county departments to marshal their resources during the approach and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. "I'm very impressed by the facilities they have here," Corbett said. "These emergency operations centers have become very, very important to the local residents and to the state residents of Pennsylvania." More than 500,000 state residents remained without power Thursday, but Corbett said the state had fared well …

By Karen A. Stout, David Brookstein and Suzanne Holloman Until its decline in the 1970s, manufacturing was the cornerstone on which Pennsylvania’s economy was built. Last week, Governor Corbett’s Manufacturing Advisory Council outlined recommendations by which the Commonwealth can once again emerge as a leader in the manufacturing industry. Education and training will play a key role in bringing this “manufacturing renaissance” to fruition. According to the council’s report, 82 percent of manufacturers nationwide perceive a serious to moderate skill gap in their employees, and 74 percent cite this gap as negatively impacting their company’s ability to expand. The gap is further amplified by a perceived lack of confidence in the long-term …

Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards join business and nonprofit leaders in call to restore state health and human services funding.
Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards joined State Representative Matt Bradford (D-70th) and nonprofit and business representatives at the Montgomery County Courthouse on Thursday to denounce cuts to health and human services in the proposed Pennsylvania state budget for 2012-13. Referencing the recent controversy over Gov. Tom Corbett's statement that Pennsylvania women who didn't want to see a pre-abortion ultrasound should "close their eyes," Shapiro claimed that Corbett had "closed his eyes" to the plight of "the most vulnerable [people] in Pennsylvania." "We're here to say to Governor Corbett and our friends in the legislature, open your eyes to the reality of what a 20 percent cut to human services would …
