Hatboro-Horsham High School's student council collected enough food, gift cards and money to provide food and Christmas gifts for 109 district families in need. Extra food will benefit area food banks.
More than 100 Hatboro and Horsham families struggling to put food on the table will have a bounty of food in anticipation of Christmas. As part of Hatboro-Horsham High School's annual Feed A Friend food drive, 109 district families will receive about a month's worth of non-perishable food items, a frozen turkey, more than $50 in gift cards and Christmas gifts for kids, according to the high school's student council advisor, Dave Thomas. In all, the 106-member student council, with donations from Hatboro and Horsham residents and businesses, collected "easily" more than 50,000 food items, according to Thomas, who, on Friday, was busily working on a spreadsheet to organize delivery routes for each of the care packages. At the outset of this…

Hatboro-Horsham High School’s student council is readying for its annual Feed A Friend food drive to benefit Hatboro and Horsham families in need.
Hatboro-Horsham High School student council members have their work cut out for them. In a matter of a few weeks, the 106-member council will be working to collect enough food, money and gift cards to provide a traditional holiday dinner, plus two weeks of groceries for “in excess” of 200 Hatboro and Horsham families. Student council advisor Dave Thomas said the high school’s seventh annual Feed A Friend collection drive is projected to be the biggest yet. Last year, the student council fed 116 families and the year prior 92 families. “We will never go less,” Thomas told Patch. “We will always go more.” That “more” may mean seeking additional donations from businesses, individuals and the community as a whole over the next few weeks. Most…

Hatboro-Horsham High School's 13th annual Wingbowl netted approximately $2,000 for the student council's Feed A Friend holiday food drive.
Twenty-eight contestants, 1,600 chicken wings, cheers, applause ... nausea and, in a few cases, vomiting filled Hatboro-Horsham High School's gymnasium Wednesday evening during the 13th annual Wingbowl. In addition to winning prizes for the top chicken wing eaters, student council advisor Dave Thomas said the event helped to raise about $2,000, plus some canned goods for the student council's annual Feed A Friend holiday drive, which helps to provide a Christmas meal and at least two weeks of food to Hatboro and Horsham families in need. Overall winner and top male eater Dan Hicks, who scarfed down 48 wings in the competition said he fared better than his second place win last year. Although grinning from ear-to-ear with trophy in hand…

The high school's annual Feed-A-Friend canned food drive netted far fewer contributions, but organizers plan to help more community members in need.
Even with less food donations, the Hatboro-Horsham High School student council plans to feed more friends than ever before. In all, 116 families – who have at least one child in Hatboro-Horsham schools – will receive a delivery of three boxes of food today as part of the annual Feed-A-Friend holiday food drive, according to Dave Thomas, student council co-advisor. “It’s been a tough year,” Thomas said. “The donations are definitely not what they were last year.” Thomas said students collected about 10,000 non-perishable food items – about 40,000 fewer items than in past years. But, because of a greater need within the Hatboro-Horsham community, 24 more families will receive food this year as compared to last year. Instead of each family …

The Hatboro-Horsham High School student council is gearing up for its annual Feed A Friend food collection drive.
Molly Mulligan is hoping to have more cans than she can handle, more cans of vegetables, soups, beans and prepared foods than she knows what to do with. Because the more cans she and the rest of the Hatboro-Horsham High School student council, faculty and parents collect from generous district residents, the more friends in need they can feed. “It’s really just as much as possible,” Molly, a Hatboro-Horsham senior and student council president, said of the goods needed to fuel the sixth annual Feed A Friend food collection drive. “It’s unlike other canned food drives. We’re helping people that are just within our school district. These are families that live next to you.” While the names of families being helped remains private, student …
