Comcast in Horsham Eyes Building Expansion

Officials said the Comcast location situated in the Pennsylvania Business Campus in Horsham is looking to double its space.

The Comcast facility located in the 12-acre Pennsylvania Business Campus on Dresher Road in Horsham is looking to double in size, officials said. Representatives from Liberty Property Trust, the campus' management company, came before the Horsham Township Council this week for review of six variances requested from the zoning hearing board. The variances, attorney Howard Brown told the governing body, are precursors to the submission of land development plans. Currently, Comcast is situated in half of 700 Dresher Road and the other half is vacant, according to Horsham Township Manager Bill Walker. Walker said Comcast moved in in November 2011 and employs 500 workers. Zoning relief stems from parking at the campus and the owner's intention …

Sullivan's Scrap Metals Add Buffers, Eyes Upgrades

The Hatboro scrap metals business is seeking approval to demolish a neighboring home and expand its Oakdale Avenue property.

Mother Nature may hold the key to how quickly Sullivan's Scrap Metals in Hatboro can demolish a neighboring house and expand operations at the Oakdale Avenue business.  Owner Mike Whalen told Patch that he's planning for work to get underway in either October or November.  "It's all a question of weather," Whalen said. "I hope it takes only a month." The Hatboro Borough Council was expected to consider land development plans Monday night, but borough solicitor Christen Pionzio said she was still working on a draft resolution for the governing body's consideration and said it would be ready in time for the council's Oct. 8 committee meeting.  "They kind of got caught between meetings," Pionzio said, referring to the Sept. 11 planning …

Firehouse Project Described as ‘Potential Litigation’

Inspections, punch lists are still needed for the long-overdue Enterprise Fire Company expansion in Hatboro.

When it comes time to weigh in on the nearly 18-month-long, still ongoing Enterprise Fire Company construction project, about 30 volunteer firefighters will have their say.  And that perspective could be offered tonight when Enterprise Fire Company President Chris Gowen said a majority of the members will begin a walk-through of the nearly complete building and offer their suggestions for unfinished or inadequate items.  A punch list needs to be in the borough’s hands by Aug. 1, Gowen told Patch and the intent, he said is to “make sure we give them something from the fire company, not just me and Jimmy (Anders III).” “What if Jimmy and I aren’t there next year?” Gowen asked. Issues of "poor workmanship" that Gowen raised about two weeks …

Protest of Graterford Prison Expansion Scheduled for Tuesday

The protest seeks to raise awareness of the $400 million Graterford Prison expansion at a time when the state is cutting budgets elsewhere.

Members of the Decarcerate Pennsylvania movement will once again take aim at Governor Corbett on Tuesday afternoon, as a planned protest seeks to raise awareness to the $400 million Graterford Prison expansion at a time when state funding for education and health services is on the decline. "Governor Corbett just began construction of two new prisons on the grounds of SCI Graterford in Montgomery County," reads a recent posting on the DecarceratePA Web site. "Meanwhile, Corbett has slashed hundreds of millions of dollars from education, environmental protection, homeowners assistance, and healthcare and mental health services." As previously reported by Patch, the construction project at Graterford will establish two new prison facilities …

However, most people in our prisons, including Graterford, aren't there for child molestation, or rape, or murder, so your point is both a strawman argument, and totally irrelevant to the discussion. When people say we have to reanalyze our criminal justice system and recognize tough on crime doesn't work, they're not saying "let rapists get off scot free", they're saying lets analyze what we're …   more ›

EPA Moves Forward with Raymark Study

The council approves partial payment for ongoing construction at the Enterprise Fire Company.

Representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency took heat from the Hatboro Borough Council for their strategy in reaching out to Hatboro homeowners who could be affected by possible groundwater contamination. EPA last year found levels of contaminants, such as tricholorethene or TCE, in groundwater near the Raymark superfund site on Jacksonville Road, where a metal fabrication company operated throughout the latter part of the 20th century. The next leg of the analysis is a vapor intrusion study, which EPA outlined at Monday's Hatboro Borough Council meeting. Vapor intrusion occurs when contaminated water rises to the surface of the soil and can seep into the air inside buildings. EPA selected 10 homes and one commercial structure …

Wondering in Hatboro

5:12 pm on Friday, October 5, 2012

EPA should test all homes in Hatboro. The underground formations in Hatboro are complicated and EPA does not know how the underground flows. Also Tests should be done to the Pennypack Creek. Does anyone ever test the sediment and water of the Pennypack.   more ›

Hatboro's Fire Station Expansion Set for Fall Completion

Additional costs and other unexpected issues like flooding, are not expected to cause major delays in the completion of Enterprise Fire Company's 2,500-square-foot addition.

Despite a few setbacks, the Enterprise Fire Company expansion project is on pace to be completed by mid-October, officials said.  Recent heavy rains caused flooding of the fire station’s basement and engine bay area, Fire Chief Keith Gordon said. The fire department’s generator was damaged and records were ruined, he said.  “There is a sump pump down there, but there was so much water the sump pump couldn’t keep up with it,” Gordon said of the two to three feet of water that entered the basement. “You’re going to have a little bit of that problem with any construction issue.” Hatboro Borough Manager Steve Plaugher said the fire department’s insurance company would cover the expenses related to flooding. Late last month, work had been …
