Graeme Park Shows Christmas Through Soldiers’ Eyes

The first-ever living history program at Graeme Park will demonstrate holiday traditions during wartime.

Do you ever wonder how soldiers embroiled in combat celebrate Christmas? It may depend on a few things, most notably the time period and what soldiers had on hand, according to Beth MacCausland, co-chair of a soldiers’ Christmas living history program coming to Graeme Park on Nov. 24. “(Revolutionary War soldiers) didn’t really celebrate Christmas like we do,” MacCausland said. “It was more new years.” Living historians will be on hand to tell guests what they got over the holiday season and what was going on around Graeme Park nearly 300 years ago when Sir William Keith, the former governor of Pennsylvania, lived at what is now the 42-acre historic site. Ann's Choice Invites Hatboro-Horsham Students for Civil War Presentation

Residents of the retirement community were joined by students from Hatboro-Horsham High School to get a glimpse of life for blacks during the 19th Century, as described by local historian Joe Becton.

Joe Becton has stories. Lots of stories. He can barely get through his lunch on this Friday afternoon without telling more stories from the Civil War era.  Becton, a renowned local historian and member of the 3rd U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment Civil War re-enactors, had just spent the last hour on the stage of the multimedia room in Ann's Choice, regaling and entertaining an audience that included residents of the retirement community and students from Hatboro-Horsham High School. Dressed in Civil War period clothing, Becton's program, entitled Blacks in America: The Civil War, Civil Rights and Beyond, described the tensions between the North and the South in the run up to the war and the difficulty of life for even the freed slaves. It's 1860s-era Civil War this weekend in Hatboro-Horsham.

1. School of the Soldier Civil War demonstrations are Saturday and Sunday at Graeme Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Features include the 104th and 71st Civil War Voluntary Infantries, the annual School of the Soldier, and the Women's Sewing Circle. Walk around and see the live demonstrations, guided tours of Keith House, and learn about the War that almost divided our country. Local author Mark Hubman will be on hand Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. signing copies of his historical fiction novel, "Dearest Issabella."  2.
