Slow Cooker Recipes for Fall

Make these tasty slow cooker recipes using your favorite fall fruits and vegetables.

Fall is the time for warm, hearty meals—and what better way to prepare them than by using your slow cooker? Simmer these fall ingredient (think pumpkins, apples and squash) slow cooker recipes in your pot, and you’ll stay warm into the winter. Ingredients: 4-5 cooking apples, peeled and sliced 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 1/2 cup flour  3/4 cup rolled oats 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 tablespoons butter, softened Directions: Lightly butter the Crock-Pot and lay the apple slices at the bottom of the pot. Combine the sugar, flour, rolled oats, nutmeg and cinnamon, and cut in the butter. Sprinkle the topping over the base of apples. Cook on low or auto for 3-5 hours. Apple-Picking Experience More Tart than Sweet

Lucy remembers a pick-your-own apple trip that neither she or her family will ever forget.

  Every September, I think back to a time years ago when I took the kids to an orchard to pick our own apples. Some friends of mine knew how to can and preserve them, and were willing to teach me. Channeling my inner Martha Stewart sounded like a good idea. I picked a beautiful September day; we got in our 15-year-old, beat up mini-van that made more noise than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and headed to Bob White Acres. The kids each grabbed a bushel, and off we went. The first took no time to fill, but after their second bushel, the kids began to get tired. Aubrie had hers about half full, while Elyse had two or three apples in her basket. Boy put his bushel on his head, found a stick which he waved wildly, and began running around breathing …

Give thanks to Johnny Appleseed for planting his delicious apples today.

Today is the day that we commemorate the great Johnny Appleseed and the work he did planting apples along the East Coast. So today wear a pot for a hat and rejoice in a juicy apple, it is Johnny Appleseed Day. “As American as apple pie” Bobby Flay’s fried apple pie will give you a twist on the traditional favorite. Fiona Apple was a popular singer songwriter in the late 90s. While you probably know about "Criminal," few know her truly great song "Sleep to Dream." An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
