Hatboro Runner Organizes Virtual 5K

To participate in Andy Aubin's 5K fundraiser, runners can do a virtual run anytime and anywhere between Feb. 1-3.

Andy Aubin has done 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and mud runs. In an effort to be eligible to participate in the 10-mile Broad Street Run, the Hatboro runner and weight loss champion is lacing up his sneaks for a virtual run.  “It’s a race like any other,” Aubin said of his Chilly Cheeks Virtual 5K, which participants can run anytime from Feb. 1-3. “Run whenever and wherever.” Aubin said he’s aiming for 60 runners and hopes to raise $1,500, which would be donated to the American Cancer Society.  Just like in regular scheduled races, runners will receive certificates and medals and will be entered to win prizes. After registering, paying the $25 fee and completing a 5K run, participants would just email Aubin their race results. Aubin, who has…

Teaming Up Against Cancer

More than 500 participants and 46 teams gathered at Hatboro-Horsham High School's Hatters Stadium this weekend to step up against cancer.

With a near cloudless sky above and a fiery sun beating down on Hatters Stadium Friday afternoon, a glimmer of a rainbow peeked out during the 13th annual Relay for Life of Eastern Montgomery County. "Ray's Rainbows," a nine-member team comprised of the Browning and Jacobi families of Willow Grove and Horsham, sought shelter under a tent, but their vivid memories shown just as bright as the rainbows on their matching T-shirts. "I'm sure he's here," Ray Browning's daughter, Chris Jacobi, said of her dad, who lost his battle with cancer two years ago. "He knew we were walking two years ago and he held on until we came back." That walk has since become a tradition for the Jacobi and Browning family, and for the first time, was carried out as …

5 Things on Baking Bread, Saving Dough, Staying Dry

The 36th annual Great American Smokeout is today - the perfect time to adopt a smoke-free lifestyle.

1. It figures we’d have perfect weather to start the work week … but cold and rain in the days leading up to the weekend. Today we can expect showers and a high of 47. 2. Since today’s weather dampens any hopes for doing things outdoors, why not make today be about things not to do? If you are one of the estimated 46 million who smoke cigarettes, you could join with the American Cancer Society today for the annual Great American Smokeout. Just think of all the dough you’d save … 3. Speaking of dough, newly non-smokers will need something to keep their hands busy. Why not bake some bread in honor of Homemade Bread Day? 4. To get started on your bread-baking journey, try a traditional recipe, or get festive with this banana cranberry bread …

Third Annual 5K Run Raises Money, Spirits In Horsham

Between an earthquake and a hurricane, the third annual Relay for Life run raised more than $5,000.

The most impressive fact that comes from Saturday morning’s Relay for Life 5K Run, held at Hatboro-Horsham High School, will be the amount of money raised for Eastern Montgomery County Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society. A close second is the fact that race organizers Karen Cassidy, Terrie Pancio and Shari Wyllie, a trio of friends who each have very personal reasons to wage a battle against cancer, found a perfect window to run, somewhere between an earthquake and a hurricane. “We’ve been friends for years and we have taken part in the Relay For Life 24-hour event for years,” Wyllie said. “We wanted to find another way to make money.” The trio of runners took it upon themselves to bring their own event to the charity. Both …

Relay for Life Hosts Cancer Prevention Study

More than 100 people signed up for the American Cancer Society study which will analyze the possible link between cancer and lifestyles.

HOPE. CURE. Those words lit up Hatter Stadium Friday night as the Eastern Montgomery County Relay for Life capped 12 hours of the 24-hour-long event with a moving luminaries ceremony. The 12th annual event, aimed at fundraising for the American Cancer Society, drew more than 40 teams and about 450 walkers, event organizers said.  To help future generations have greater hope in an ongoing quest for a cure, 107 people from the region committed to being part of an American Cancer Society study to determine the possible connection between cancer and lifestyle. Betsy Williams, who chaired the Cancer Prevention Study, said she had hoped to sign up 160 people. And, while disappointed, Williams said she is left with hope. "The people that did it …

Feet Forward For a Cause

Hundreds of area residents and cancer survivors participated in the 24-hour-long Relay for Life fundraiser in Horsham.

They laughed. They cried. And, above all else, they walked.  They walked for their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts. They walked for their fathers, brothers, grandfathers and teachers.  They walked for cancer survivors and those who succumbed to the disease. And they walked for strangers and future generations they have not yet met.  In short, several hundred people assembled at Hatter Stadium Friday for the 24-hour-long 12th annual Eastern Montgomery County Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Proudly wearing her pink breast cancer baseball cap, Linda Garcia spoke Friday with great hope - despite being diagnosed in April with a second bout of breast cancer.  "It's just knowing that so many people care …

Cancer Prevention Study Set for 'Relay for Life'

Cancer-free community members can enroll Friday during the Eastern Montgomery County Relay for Life fundraiser at Hatter Stadium.

Does your lifestyle make you susceptible to cancer? A new American Cancer Society study aims to determine just that. And, if you're between the ages of 30 and 65 and have never been diagnosed with cancer, you could enroll in the study, which is being conducted at Hatter Stadium Friday as part of the Eastern Montgomery County Relay for Life. Dubbed the Cancer Prevention Study 3, or CPS-3, the study is the third in a series conducted by the American Cancer Society to determine links between cancer and other behaviors. The first study linked cigarette smoking to cancer and the second saw a correlation between obesity and cancer. The third national study, for which the American Cancer Society hopes to survey 500,000 people, will look at the …

'Relay for Life' may Need New Home

Turf field construction at Hatboro-Horsham High School may displace annual cancer fundraiser

They likened it to changing the location for the Super Bowl, or finding a new site for a wedding at the last minute.  With four months to go until the annual Relay for Life event - which until last week had been planned for Hatboro-Horsham High School's football field - district officials notified organizers that the annual American Cancery Society fundraiser may need to find a new home.  And, during Tuesday night's school board meeting, district teachers Betsy Williams and Kathleen Welsh pleaded for the board to consider moving the construction of turf fields until sometime after the June 17-18 event.  The board took no action and Superintendent Curtis Griffin did not have an immediate answer.  "It’s a very difficult decision," Griffin …
