Should Hatboro-Horsham Pay for AP Exams?

Hatboro-Horsham School District pays the $89 fee for each Advanced Placement exam, totaling more than $30,000 per year.

Each year, more Hatboro-Horsham High School students are getting a jumpstart on college credits by taking Advanced Placement courses. More courses mean more end-of-semester exams and more district funding to cover the $89 fee per student. In all, Hatboro-Horsham will spend nearly $35,000 to cover the costs of 388 tests for the 268 students currently enrolled in AP courses – the district’s highest number of AP students to date, according to Principal Dennis Williams.  During this week’s school board work session, Williams proposed two options to lessen the district’s AP exam expense. The first involves paying for one AP exam next school year “and then start to phase it out where students would be responsible for the exam.” The second option…

I only graduated last year, and to be honest I don't think that the school should pay for the AP exams. Most of the children taking them aren't taking them because they want to, but because they feel obligated to.
