Joe Sherman, 97, of Hatboro

An interment service will be held next month for Joe Sherman, formerly of Hatboro.

Joe Sherman, the son of eastern European immigrants and a Hatboro resident of the last 50 years, died on March 27. He was 97. The beloved husband of Virginia Sherman, Sherman is survived by his children Michael, Cynthia, Peter and Thomas and 11 grandchildren.  After a stint in the CCC's in the 1930s, he traveled cross country on his motorcycle to enroll at the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa where he became the first of his family to achieve a college degree. He met and married Virginia Moffit in 1943, celebrating 70 years of marriage just last November. Upon marriage, Sherman immediately set out to serve in World War II as a lieutenant in the Air Force, serving in Europe until the duration of the War. Sherman achieved the…

George E. Hentschel Jr., 92, of Hatboro

Funeral arrangements have been set for George E. Hentschel Jr. of Hatboro.

George E. Hentschel, Jr. of Spring House Estates, formerly of Hatboro, died on Feb. 6. He was 92. He was the beloved husband of his first wife, the late Lucille (Peg) Hentschel, and his second wife, the late Wanda C. Hentschel. Hentschel was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran who served in WWII with the 8th Air Force 398 Division of the 601st Squadron. He was a member of the American Legion-William Boulton Dixon, PA Post 10, W.K, Bray Lodge No. 410 F. &A.M. and The Lehigh Consistory. He was a Past Grand Tall Cedar of the Crooked Billet No. 10 Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America. He also received the "Service to Youth" award from the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce. Anna M. "Nancy" Goodwin of Hatboro will be laid to rest on Friday.

Anna M. “Nancy” Goodwin of Hatboro died on Jan. 14. She was 95. The beloved wife of the late Robert E. Goodwin with whom she had shared 49 years of marriage, Goodwin was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Edward P. and Cecilia (nee Nolen) Conlan. She was a member of the Review Club of Montgomery County. Goodwin enjoyed spending summers in Cape May and Ocean City, was an avid reader, and player of Canasta and Scrabble. Goodwin loved spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is survived by six children, Edward P. Goodwin and his wife Magdalena; Kathleen Thygeson and her husband William; Cecilia McAndrews and her husband Richard; Robert E. Goodwin, Jr.; Nancy A. Nelson; Mary Beth Dougherty …

Long-Time Hatboro Business Owner Dies

Al Wipplinger, the owner of Village Hardware and Hobbies in Hatboro died on Sunday at age 72.

Hatboro business owner Alvin C. Wipplinger Jr., a self-described “big kid at heart” introduced the lure of trains and accompanying railroad tracks to a new generation of enthusiasts. Wipplinger, known to many as Al, not only created the Main Street Hatboro Model Train Show – which wrapped its seventh annual event last month – he also bought and sold trains through his borough business, Village Hardware and Hobbies. Wipplinger, of Horsham died on Sunday. He was 72. Following his death, folks who worked with him on all things trains, said the borough’s train show, which doubles as a fundraiser for the Main Street Hatboro program, would continue. “He provided the leadership that was necessary to get this thing off the ground,” Al Zollers, a …

Norman Schimpf, 86, of Hatboro

Funeral arrangements have been set for Sunday for long-time Hatboro resident Norman H. Schimpf.

Norman H. Schimpf, a resident of Hatboro for 56 years, died Nov. 7 in Riddle Memorial Hospital. He was 86. Schimpf was preceded in death by his devoted wife Violet L. (nee Krouse) with whom he had shared 53 years of marriage. He was born in Philadelphia a son of the late Charles M. and Gertrude Woelfel Schimpf. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he began his career with Bell Telephone as an installer, a position he held for over 35 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers and the Bell Telephone Barber Shop Quartet. He was a charter member of the Hideaway Swim Club in Horsham, and a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hatboro where he served …

Several high-ranking politicos, including Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Mitt Romney and Bill Clinton are spending the last few days before the election in Montgomery County in a last big push to mobilize voters.

  With only a few days left until the election, candidates and their proxies are making the rounds in some of the battleground states this weekend, including Pennsylvania. Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, made a few campaign stops in Montgomery County this weekend – in Media on Friday and then in Norristown, West Chester, Germantown and the Northeast on Saturday. On her Saturday stops, she was accompanied by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. Funeral Arrangements Set for 'Mayor Joe'

Hatboro's former mayor and businessman Joe Celano will be laid to rest on Nov. 8.

Joseph Celano of Hatboro died on Oct. 30. He was 96. He was the beloved husband of the late Arlene Celano with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Born in New York City, he was the son of Vito and Giovanina Celano. The Celanos owned and operated the Hatboro Music Shop from 1945 until 2002. They served three generations of music customers. For 57 years Mr. Celano walked to work, rain or shine, and always had a smile for everyone. He served the Borough of Hatboro on the Police Commission, as chairman of the board of the Hatboro Area YMCA and as mayor from 1981 until 2005. He also was the president of the Montgomery County Mayors Association. As mayor, he performed more than 2,000 matrimonial ceremonies. He was known throughout the community…

Jean Nicholson, 88, of Warminster

The wife of the late Charles G. Nicholson, a former State Rep., Mrs. Nicholson was involved in the Hatboro, Abington and Willow Grove communities.

Jean (Billman) Nicholson, of Warminster, died Oct. 14. She was 88. Nicholson was the last survivor of seven children. She grew up in the lower East Falls section of Philadelphia. She graduated from Germantown High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she met her future husband, the late Charles G. Nicholson, who in the 1960s served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, covering Hatboro in his district.  Nicholson was involved in the Hatboro and Willow Grove communities and served as president in the Women’s Auxiliary for Abington Memorial Hospital and sang for many years in the Abington Choral Club, where she also served as president. John J. Guglietti, 92, of Horsham

A viewing and funeral are scheduled for Wednesday morning for John J. Guglietti, of Horsham.

John J. Guglietti of Horsham died on Oct. 17. He was 92. The beloved husband of Beatrice M. Guglietti with whom he had shared 64 years of marriage, Mr. Guglietti, a Philadelphia native, was the son of the late Giovanni and Concetta Guglietti. He worked with Conservation Corps for two years before joining the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war he was an employee of Quality Gas in Hatboro and for over 30 years was assigned to the 111th Fighter Wing Pennsylvania National Guard at the Willow Grove Joint Naval Air Station. In addition to his wife, Mr. Guglietti is survived by a sister Rita Digneo and his dear friends Yvonne and John Reigelman.
