Hatboro Runner Organizes Virtual 5K

To participate in Andy Aubin's 5K fundraiser, runners can do a virtual run anytime and anywhere between Feb. 1-3.

Andy Aubin has done 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and mud runs.

In an effort to be eligible to participate in the 10-mile Broad Street Run, the Hatboro runner and weight loss champion is lacing up his sneaks for a virtual run.

“It’s a race like any other,” Aubin said of his Chilly Cheeks Virtual 5K, which participants can run anytime from Feb. 1-3. “Run whenever and wherever.”

Aubin said he’s aiming for 60 runners and hopes to raise $1,500, which would be donated to the American Cancer Society

Just like in regular scheduled races, runners will receive certificates and medals and will be entered to win prizes. After registering, paying the $25 fee and completing a 5K run, participants would just email Aubin their race results.

Aubin, who has lost 125 pounds since November 2011 - largely by running - said competing in the Broad Street Run “was the last one of my initial goals that I set up for myself."

And since the Philadelphia run is done through lottery, Aubin knew that organizing a fundraiser would guarantee him a spot. Because Aubin’s virtual race has no set location, it’s open to as many people as possible, and from anywhere.

“We’ve had people from Canada (register),” Aubin said.
