Hatboro Little League Holds Opening Day Ceremony

Long-time volunteers were recognized during the evening of awards, which served as a kickoff to the league's 57th season.

Buzzing chatter, kids warming up, and parents gloating to the unforgettable ringing  sound of baseball to bat served as the backdrop for opening day ceremony.

The league, which boasts more than 450 kids in baseball and softball, kicked off its 57th season Friday night with a hall of fame like lineup of  local dignitaries, including members of Hatboro's Borough Council.

State Rep. Thomas Murt said the little league "builds the character of the young in the community."

The volunteer-driven organization had all the bases covered as smiles told the story of little leaguers ready to take swings at home plate.

Hatboro Little League President Rebecca Brown, who served as master of ceremonies, gave out awards to local sponsor of the year Hatboro Mayor Norm Hawkes for his financial donation to the league. Lifetime award went to Carr & Duff.

As the ceremony winded down, Gerry Scannell received the Bob Gaunt Volunteer Award, which brought out roars from the crowd. Reflecting on his relationship with Gaunt, Scannell said “It's been four years and I miss my friend."

Joe Sullivan was recognized for his 56 full years of service to the league.

“This is what keeps me busy during this time of year," Sullivan said. "I’m here for the kids and baseball.”
