Digging out, cleaning up...
Being out in the storm listening to the creaking, groaning, complaining and occasionally exploding trees was exciting, and driving around to survey the damage was fascinating. And cooking over the fireplace and shivering in the dark is a wonderful colonial re-enactment experience. But there will be much to clean up! Don't be afraid to wander over to a neighbor, lend your chainsaw and muscle to the effort, especially of there are older folks or single moms with shoveling left undone. (Remind me to go over to those houses I walked past ealier in the week with the sidewalks still covered...wouldn't hurt me to take care of that for them...)
Over behind Bazaar Beer I saw a generator running with power cords stretched out in all directions. And the book stores, coffee shops and Wegman's cafeterias are full of folks charging up and checking their e-mail, for the most part, cheerful and neighborly in the midst of PECO's second worst storm recovery ever, according to the news. Patience, all! We'll weather this one, too.
