Whiz Kid - Meet Michael Drennen

Pennypack Elementary fifth-grader knows trains and likes to volunteer his time at the Willow Grove Fire Company

Whether N Gauge, HO Scale or life-size trains, Michael Drennen knows them very well. At age 11, the Pennypack Elementary School fifth-grader's knowledge of trains could stump even the best Jeopardy game player.

Mike’s father, Rich Drennen works for SEPTA and Mike said that his interest in trains started there. “My dad likes trains and so did his dad so it kind of rubbed off on me, you can say,” said Mike.

Another passion Mike has is with the Willow Grove Fire Company. Mike volunteers his time to help clean the engines for different competitions throughout the year. He also helps with community clean-up activities conducted by the fire department.

“I help this woman who’s husband (a firefighter) died a few years ago.  I go to her home to help rake leaves, pull weeds and pick up trash,” Mike said.

When Mike’s not working on his trains, taking music lessons or doing volunteer work around the community, he likes to take pictures and shoot videos of trains in Center City, Philadelphia, Wayne Junction and around Hatboro.
