Whiz Kid - Meet Jaymie Kreiling

The Hatboro-Horsham High School senior served as MC at an open mic night she organized.

For Jaymie Kreiling, serving as the bubbly announcer at the Horsham Township Library's open mic night was more than a graduation project.

A soon-to-be communications major at James Madison University and prospective public relations professional, Kreiling, 18,  of Horsham, used the exercise to break free from her bashful side.

"This definitely is bringing me out of my shell," Kreiling said as a group of singer/songwriters performed. Between each song, poetry reading, or comedy skit, Kreiling, who is shy by nature, took to the podium to introduce the next performer.

And, for someone who blushes easily and fidgets nervously while talking about herself, it was no small feat. Perhaps an even bigger challenge involved promoting the open mic night, making sure she had enough entertainment - 18 acts altogether performed - and that seats were filled in the library's conference room.

If the crowded room was any indication, Kreiling succeeded in her first quasi-PR undertaking, which took six weeks of planning and promotion.

"It was really stressful," she said. "There was a lot that went into it. I was worried no one was going to come."
