Whiz Kid - Meet Drew Muller

The recent graduate will study journalism and communications.

Drew Muller brings it.

“Everything I try to do, I try to do it the best I can,” said the 2011 graduate and soon-to-be freshman at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University.

This year the 18-year-old Muller, from Horsham, has paired his loves of music and journalism, spearheading Hatboro-Horsham’s third annual Battle of the Bands and writing for the teens "Reality" section for Calkins Media.

Muller, an alto saxophonist (and lead sax in Hatboro-Horsham’s jazz band) was in the now-defunct band Exhibit A when they won the school’s Battle of the Bands last year.

This year, he took over the Battle of the Bands’ helm as its organizer for his senior project, leading efforts that ultimately raised $1,800 for , a nonprofit that donates proceeds to local charities. According to Muller, one of the most difficult things that he learned was how to coordinate with those who helped him. “They all came through, which was great,” he said.

The advertising experience will help him as he studies journalism and communications in college, as will his experience as co-editor-in-chief for Hatboro-Horsham’s newspaper, "Hat Chat."

“It’s just a great way to have my voice heard and it’s given me an invaluable confidence that people actually care about what I think because people have actually written in, responding to what I’ve written.”

In the fall he hopes to write for Syracuse’s "The Daily Orange," play with the jazz band and work with the school radio station.
