Hatboro-Horsham High School Hosts FIRST Robotics District Competition

CAN ROBOTS PLAY BASKETBALL? HATBORO-HORSHAM HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS ROBOTICS COMPETITION TO FIND OUT!

March 2-3 event expected to draw 1,000 students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

WHAT:  Nearly 1,000 high school students from across the Tri-State area will converge on Hatboro-Horsham High School for the two-day Hatboro-Horsham FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics District Competition that challenges participants’ skills in state-of-the-art technologies and knowledge in math and science. Scholarships and prizes will be at stake as the 38 robotics teams will compete to earn enough points to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Robotics Region Championships held in mid-April. In order for the teams to qualify for the next round, their robots need to play a modified version of basketball and score the most points against other robots in the competition.

WHEN: There will be a series of events taking place from March 2 through 3. Here is a summary of each day’s activities:

  • Friday, March 2 — An opening ceremony for the two-day competition will take place at 11:35 a.m., which will kick-off the event. The matches will start at 12 p.m. and continue until 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 3 — Opening ceremonies for the event will be held at 8:15 a.m. The competition will begin at 8:45 a.m. and continue until 12 p.m. The event will resume at 1 p.m. and continue, until the awards ceremony is held at 4:45 p.m. The two-day competition will conclude at 6 p.m.

WHERE: Hatboro-Horsham High School, 899 Horsham Road in Horsham. The event will be held in the high school’s gymnasium.

BACKGROUND: Partnering with Upper Moreland High School’s robotics program, Hatboro-Horsham High School’s Robotics Club has a total of 34 members. Created in 2001, the purpose of the program is to inspire students to explore and pursue careers in science, technology, mathematics or engineering.  The program is made possible with the funding assistance of the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Motorola Mobility and other corporate and private sponsors. The FIRST Robotics District Competition brings together students and engages them in different programs that foster engineering, communication, leadership and technology skills.
