Blair Mill Students Share Where GPS Takes Them

Four Blair Mill students share how the school's leadership opportunities and drive for increased student engagement put them in the fast lane for success.

Just like a GPS is used to get you places, a GPS at Blair Mill Elementary School transports students on the road to excellence, according to students and district officials alike.

Except at the Hatboro-Horsham District school, GPS–instead of representing a Global Positioning System–refers to:

  • Generating leaders
  • Pedagogy with technology
  • Student engagement
Student ambassadors Jacob Duncan, Isabel Lee, Gwyneth Lauzier and Skylar Smith, described by Blair Mill Principal Nancy Doherty as the "fab four," represented the school at last month's Pennsylvania School Boards Association Education Excellence Fair.

During Monday night's school board meeting, the students took turns highlighting some of the programs at Blair Mill that help to build student leaders and increase engagement.

Jacob highlighted the student-led WBME-TV broadcast and the First in Math program, which provides students in-school and at-home access to math-related games and activities.

Leadership opportunities are available in many classrooms, he said, of various designations, including table helper, floor helper or TerraCycle student leaders who help collect recycling bins. "Always remember to follow the leader in you."

In addition to Blair Mill's inclusion in the two-day school leadership conference in Hershey, Keith Valley Middle School students manned a booth and discussed the school's KV K'NEX anti-bullying program

The two Hatboro-Horsham schools were among 36 booths representing schools statewide, according to the PSBA Web site.

Doherty said the fair's attendees all were interested in hearing what the students had to say.

"We had a lot of traffic at the two booths," Doherty said. "They had so much pride that the ladies and gentlemen that stopped by had to just stay and listen. They were so drawn by their enthusiasm ... The student leadership was so evident. I couldn’t be more proud."
