Why do you need a text.doc version of your resume?

Why do you need a text.doc of your resume?

As you will note in our Resume and Job Search Correspondence Package, we include a text version of your resume.  Often I have clients ask me: “what is that and why do I need it”.  Here are the answers:

  • When you are applying for positions where companies or job boards are using databases to match job openings with qualified applicants, and a job seeker loads a Word (.doc or .docx) version of their resume, almost all databases automatically convert it to a text version (.txt) and therefore all the formatting is lost.
  •  A more effective way to upload your resume into any database (or online application) is to directly load a text version.  Once you create a text version of your resume, you will be able to re-format it (adding appropriate spacing) so it will be more visually appealing when the employer views it in the database.
