Hundreds of Montgomery County properties-including 19 in Hatboro and Horsham-are slated to be auctioned at the county treasurer’s real estate tax upset sale on Thursday.
Properties offered at the upset sale are delinquent for two years on real estate taxes.
Thursday's upset sale process began in July, when more than 1,300 delinquent taxpayers received their first formal notice of the sale proceedings. Since then, more than 700 property owners have made payment or entered payment plans, resulting in $3.3 million of 2011 county, school, township and borough taxes collected, according to Montgomery County Treasurer Jason Salus.
There are currently several hundred properties remaining on the sale list, including four in Upper Moreland. Typically, property owners make payments up until the morning of the sale to avoid having their property exposed to sale, Salus said.
The minimum bid for each property offered at the upset sale is collection costs, outstanding taxes and municipal liens.
“The upset sale is one of our most effective means for collecting chronically delinquent real estate taxes for the county, our school districts, townships and boroughs," Salus said. "Even after hundreds of property owners have made payment, many good investment opportunities remain in every corner of the county."
