Poll: Should Turnpike Speed Limit be 70 MPH?

State lawmakers are considering raising the speed limit to 70 miles per hour.

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour.

The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike.

Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements.

There is no timetable for when - or if  - the bill will come to a vote. Turnpike officials say the speed limit change would not be made without additional study and would apply only to some portions of the road.

Do you think the speed limit should be raised? Vote in our poll and add your comments below.

Why lower it to 70?

drivers are already exceeding the 65 mph speed limit. normal speed for vehicle is over 70 now with many drivers doing 10-20 mph over the limit. if the speed limit is increased, so will these. 70mph means vehicles routinely traveling at 80 and over. The turnpike is already congested and the increase speed means additional dangers, more accidents, more injuries and fatalities. Just because drivers are already doing 5 - 10 mph over the speed limit does not make it acceptable.

Sure raise it, I know a lot of ER nurses that are out of work.

If everyone paid attention while driving I wouldn't care if it were 120 miles an hour. But when I drive on the Turnpike or any other fast road, rarely do I see people putting full attention to driving. Nothing more wonderful to see at 80 miles an hour like a woman with the mirror down doing her makeup, or some yuppy texting.
