Montco Keeps an Eye on Turnpike Talks

With six interchanges, Montgomery County tops the list for Turnpike exits.

The county has enough traffic issues. Transportation Planning Chief Leo D. Bagley wants to make sure, as the 10-year plan for the Pennsylvania Turnpike falls into place, no more arise.

Montgomery County has six interchanges, "more than any other county in the state," Bagley told Phillyburbs.com. "We want to make sure that our other roads do not get overwhelmed when traffic just rushes off the interchange when motorists do not have to stop and pay tolls."

As the state plans to make all toll plazas electronic (and not manned by humans), Bagley has a keen eye on the state to make sure Montgomery County's roads are not too backed up in the process.

“We want to make sure that this free flow of traffic onto the Schuylkill Expressway and Route 611 does not overwhelm these roads,” Bagley told Phillyburbs.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 68 percent of the drivers on the Turnpike already use E-Z Pass, an electronic system for paying tolls. The passes are sold now at retail outlets such as Giant, Walmart, Acme and Walgreens, as well as local AAA facilities, according to PATurnpike.com.
