How to Recycle More This Year

Are you baffled by what is and is not recyclable?

In Hatboro, borough employees collect recycling along with trash pickup, while in Horsham residents can take a DIY approach and drop off recyclable items at several township locations, or have it hauled away by independent trash haulers. 

Here's what you need to know:

Hatboro accepts:

  • Plastic containers bearing a #1 through #7, or a recycling symbol
  • Glass
  • Cans
  • Newspapers, computer paper, cardboard, cereal boxes, junk mail, magazines and catalogs

Things to keep in mind:

  • Lids must be removed
  • Hatboro offers single-stream recycling, so items can be co-mingled when placed curbside for collection.
  • Boxes must be broken down and tied.
  • Tied items can not be thicker than 16 inches and can not be longer or wider than 36 inches.
  • Residents must call borough hall (215-443-9100) and schedule pickup of electronic items such as computers, TVs, cell phones and electronic games or devices. Small electronics items weighing less than 50 pounds can be picked up free of charge.
  • Electronic items which are 19 inches or larger require a bulk permit, which costs $7.50. These items must be scheduled and paid for at least one business day in advance.

Hatboro does not accept:

  • Wax paper, foil, or wax-coated boxes or plastic bags.

    Horsham Township residents are required to recycle by state law and municipal ordinance. Licensed residential trash haulers are required to collect recyclables at least once a week. 

    Recyclable items collected in Horsham include:

    • Cartons (beverage, tissue, food)
    • Cereal boxes
    • Corrugated/cardboard boxes
    • Cracker/cookie/candy boxes
    • Gift/toy boxes
    • Gift wrap (no foil)
    • Glass bottles (clear/green/brown)
    • Hardcover books
    • Junk mail, greeting cards
    • Magazines, newspapers
    • Office/computer paper
    • Paper plates (not soiled)
    • Pizza boxes (no wax paper)
    • Plastic #1— #7 (number is on bottom)
    • Plastic bags
    • Steel cans
    • Telephone books

    Items not acceptable for recycling, according to Horsham Township:

    • Batteries
    • Foam packaging
    • Oil cans
    • Paint
    • Styrofoam
    • Televisions/electronics
    • Wax corrugated boxes
    • Wax paper
    • Wood objects
