Interested in mapping out a trail route to bike, run, or walk before winter sets in?
Horsham Township’s got you covered. Not only through its extensive network of inter-weaving trails, but through a color-coded map depicting everything from parks, schools, golf courses and Willow Grove air base.
The township mailed out the bright-colored trail map to residents in 2009 hoping outdoor enthusiasts would take note of the trails in or abutting their backyards.
“People were very happy with it and considered it very helpful,” Township Manager Bill Walker said. “People started coming up with trail connections … Usually when you want to put connecting trails in you get a lot of negative feedback from residents.”
That positive momentum carried through to the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, which represents 1,455 second class townships, including Horsham. As part of its 43rd Annual Township Citizen Communication Contest, the state and federal lobbying group awarded Horsham with first place in the “other publications” category for its trail map. The township tied for second place in the Web sites category.
Aside from communications via the trail map and Web site, Horsham also sends out e-mail alerts notifying those who’ve signed up about various township-specific issues like hydrant flushing, government meeting schedules and road closings.
Horsham also regularly works with an outside company to put together and distribute community information guides, Walker said, adding that the next one is due in a few months.
“We strive to keep the citizens informed the best we can,” Walker said. “We’re proud of our awards that show that we are doing a good job.”
