Hatboro-Horsham Vows to Limit Tax Hike

The Hatboro-Horsham School Board approved a resolution certifying that the district would not increase its millage rate for 2014-2015 beyond the cap as established under Act 1.

A multi-million dollar new elementary school is on the horizon. Many of the school district's other buildings are outdated and in need of renovations. Pension and health insurance costs continue to go up.

So how much will all of this cost taxpayers?

In the 2014-2015 school year, at least, Hatboro-Horsham School District expenses should cost taxpayers, at most, 2.1 percent more than in the 2013-2014 school year.

On Monday night, the school board approved a resolution certifying that the district would not increase its millage rate for 2014-2015 beyond the 2.1 percent cap as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education under Act 1

"The board certifies that increasing any tax at a rate less than equal to the index will be sufficient to balance its final budget of the 2014-2015 fiscal year," the resolution reads.

By adopting the resolution, the district can not seek to raise taxes higher than that amount through voter referendum, according to the resolution.
