Hatboro Voters Cast Votes for Feeding Needy

The Hatboro Republican Organization collected 75 bags of non-perishable food items during an Election Day food drive.

When Sandy Zygmont heard that Hatboro food banks were struggling to keep their shelves stocked, she wanted to help.

As chairwoman of the Hatboro Republican Organization, Zygmont, the wife of Hatboro Borough Council President John Zygmont, opted to blend her desire to help with politics.

The result, an Election Day non-perishable food collection drive to benefit St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, netted a "minimum of 75" bags of food, Zygmont told Patch after Tuesday's polls closed. Zygmont placed collection bins at each of the borough's four polling places.

By noon on Tuesday, the bin at Crooked Billet Elementary School had been filled and emptied twice, according to Democrat John Demcisak.

"We decided we wanted to do some community service," Zygmont told Patch while outside of the polling place at the Enterprise Fire Company in Hatboro Tuesday evening. "I thought, what better way? Everybody comes to vote."

Even though the food collection drive was coordinated by a political group, Zygmont said the effort was anything but political.

"It's about helping people," she said.
