Hatboro to Consider Dumpster, PODS Ordinance

The Hatboro Borough Council is considering an ordinance that would designate the use of PODS and Dumpsters for a specific period of time.

Hatboro could become tidier in the new year under a proposed ordinance that would set time limits and restrictions for the the use of Dumpsters and PODS.

The governing body recently authorized advertisement of an ordinance aimed at setting defined time periods for the use of Dumpsters and PODS, or Portable On Demand Storage units. The council is expected to consider the local regulation during its Jan. 27 meeting.

Under the proposed ordinance, those wishing to use either a Dumpster or PODS would need to do so by permit. If granted, applicants would be allowed to use it for 30 days, Borough Manager Fred Zollers said previously.

Two 30-day extensions could be granted under the tentative law, according to Zollers, meaning that residents and business owners could put Dumpsters or PODS in place for up to 90 days with borough authorization.

As proposed, portable storage units must be no larger than eight feet by eight feet by 16 feet. Dumpsters can not exceed 30 cubic yards in size, according to the draft ordinance.

Those who violate the ordinance–once it's adopted–could be fined up to $300, according to a draft ordinance.

As it stands now, the borough code does not regulate use of the storage and trash collecting receptacles, borough officials have said.
