Assistant borough secretary Diane Hegele – the wife of Councilman Robert Hegele – received a $3,000 pay increase, making her salary $53,500 following a 6-0 vote from the council Monday. Mrs. Hegele will now serve as the open records officer, as well as the grant administrator for the . Council President John Zygmont was approved to serve as the firehouse grant project administrator alternate.

Although Mr. Hegele said afterward that he did not cast a for his wife’s new duties and salary increase, he did not note an abstention when the vote was taken.

Zygmont asked borough attorney Christen Pionzio if the vote should be retaken.

“I just want to make sure we didn’t have anything go wrong,” Zygmont said. Pionzio said the vote was fine.

In addition to Mrs. Hegele’s role changes, , who also works as the borough’s Public Works superintendent, was boosted in salary by $11,500 to $75,000. Zygmont said previously that Zollers will serve in the borough manager post at least through year's end and possibly longer.

As part of his borough manager responsibilities, Zollers will also serve as the borough secretary, the police pension plan administrator and the county’s tax collection committee alternate.

Zygmont said the $65,500 net annual savings from Plaugher’s $80,000 salary would be used for “general purposes.”

“We will also be hiring a public works employee that had been put on hold since the beginning of the year,” Zygmont said.

Well, well, well ... looks like a conflict of interest to me! DH gets salary increase, and the hubby councilman silently supports it. He didn't even have the decency to abstain from a vote, due to a conflict of interest (he directly benefits from her pay increase). Shame on Ms. Pionzio for not supporting a re-vote on the matter. There is clearly a lack of ethics in Boro operations!
