Storm Causes Heavy Damage in Horsham

A quick-moving storm brought wind, rain, and hail that damaged several homes in Horsham. The National Weather Service was called out to investigate the storm.

Strong winds, hail and heavy rains Wednesday wreaked havoc in Horsham, downing power lines and trees in the Propectville section of the township and closing roadways.

Horsham Road is closed between Limekiln Pike and Cedar Hill Road. A PECO foreman said the road will be opened by Thursday morning.

"All of the sudden the sky turned black and the storm started," said Ross Pasquale of Horsham, describing what he saw Wednesday afternoon.

The storm brought down trees and large branches along Horsham Road and in the Whitemarsh Memorial Park, where the cemetery was littered with debris.

Around 3:50 p.m. calls started coming into 9-1-1 reporting a series of trees and branches had been blown onto Horsham Road. Electrical wires were lying on the road and smoke poured from the poles, according to residents and Montgomery County dispatch.

The responded along with police and shut down the road until PECO could get crews to the scene.

By 8 p.m., PECO crews were working on restoring power to homes on Summerfield Court.

The sound of chainsaws and diesel engines were heard as tree removers worked clearing the road of trees littered on people's lawns and homes.

Authorities confirmed that the National Weather Service was investigating whether a tornado caused the damage near the intersection of Horsham and Cedar Hill roads.
