Road Reopened Following Chemical Spill

Hatboro police cite driver responsible for pool chemical spill

Hatboro Police cited the driver of a pool supply company for causing an accidental spill of pool chemicals Monday morning.

The spill occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of North York Road and Montgomery Avenue, just outside of the Wawa, officials said. Following the spill, police said the driver headed northbound on North York Road.

Chris Gowen, president of Enterprise Fire Co., said his crew was returning from a gas leak on Summit Avenue when they discovered the spill.

"We were coming down York and saw a car pushing along a plastic container," Gowen said. "We knew it was something. It had an odor to it."

Because they didn't know if it was a combustible chemical, Gowen said crews "created a hot zone" and shut down traffic until the material was determined and the area was secured. The county's HazMat team determined it was a "fairly easy cleanup," Gowen said.

The area around the spill was been taped off with red caution tape until the cleanup was finished, just after 11 a.m. Gowen said "no more than a quart" had spilled.

"We can't clean it up and you can't put it on any of the trash trucks," Gowen said. "It's not a naturally occurring chemical that we know of."

Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner said the driver was cited for not securing the load. Gardner said the truck's tailgate was not up.
