Man Faces More Charges in Alleged Knifepoint Robbery

A Hatboro man is facing additional felony charges in connection with an alleged knifepoint robbery in Upper Moreland Township.

A 19-year-old Hatboro man is facing four additional felony robbery counts, as well as conspiracy, theft and an assault charge stemming from an alleged knifepoint robbery in Upper Moreland Township.

During a court appearance on Thursday, Hatboro District Judge Paul Leo agreed to add the new charges to the four felony counts that Matthew John Curran was charged with in June stemming from an alleged knifepoint robbery on June 14.

Curran, according to court documents, along with Joseph Grady, 24, of Bensalem, met up with two other men at Village Green Apartments on Surry Lane in Upper Moreland around 1 p.m. on June 14 to smoke marijuana and buy prescription drugs.

But when Curran and Grady allegedly got in the backseat of the victim’s car, Curran and Grady, instead of buying 25 Klonempins for the previously agreed upon $100, “suddenly and violently assaulted” the victims within “seconds” of entering the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.

At one point during the attack, Curran allegedly put the victim in a chokehold, held a knife to his throat and said, “give me everything or I’ll slice your throat.”

According to police, the victim of Curran’s alleged attack was treated and released from Abington Memorial Hospital for a swollen eye and injuries to his face stemming from being punched in the head.

Grady allegedly robbed the other man at knifepoint according to court documents. The man was able to flee the car and called police.

Grady’s step-brother, Carl Sauter, 19, of Hatboro, is also facing charges in conjunction with the June 14 incident. Sauter, according to court documents, allegedly punched one of the victims six to eight times in the face as he released himself from Curran’s grip and attempted to exit the vehicle.

Sauter, according to court documents, pulled the victim out of the car and, along with Curran, punched him in the face and head. Sauter and Curran then allegedly stole the victim’s wallet, car keys and cigarettes from the car.

Grady is facing seven felony robbery counts, simple assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, possessing an instrument of crime, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. He and Curran signed waivers foregoing their preliminary hearings on Thursday.

Sauter, who has been charged with seven felony robbery and conspiracy charges and three misdemeanor charges assault and theft charges, had his preliminary hearing continued until Aug. 13.

Grady is being held at the Montgomery County Correction Facility on $25,000 bail. Curran’s bail was reduced on Thursday to $10,000. Sauter is being held on $75,000 bail.
