Hatboro SEPTA Train Strikes and Kills Man; Suicide Suspected

Authorities believe the man bludgeoned his wife and son to death in their Warrington home before taking his own life.

A man in Hatboro was struck and killed by a SEPTA Regional Rail train headed to Warminster early Saturday morning, police confirm.

Authorities' preliminary investigation has found evidence that the white male was laying down with his head on the tracks shortly before 1 a.m. when a passenger train struck him.

"There are indications that the man comitted suicide, but the coroner's report will rule whether or not it was," Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner said early Saturday morning.

According to a Phillyburbs.com article, the man, identified as Christopher Moyer, is believed to have murdered his wife and son Friday night in their Warrington home prior to taking his own life. Police found a bloody baseball bat and the man's wife and 7-year-old son bludgeoned to death upon responding to a 911 call placed at 9:40 p.m., in which authorities said the man admitted to the dispatcher that he killed his family.

A few hours later, a Hatboro police officer was in the vicinity of the crossing at Meadowbrook Avenue and spotted the body just as the train engineer reported the incident at 12:56 a.m., Gardner said.

Gardner added that the man was believed to have been killed on impact.

The man did have idenfication on him and authorities are in the process of notifying his family, Gardner said.

According to the chief, the train did have passengers on board and none of them were injured.

About an hour after the man was killed, the Montgomery County Coroner arrived on the scene to collect the man's body. Also, a ladder truck from Hatboro's was used to take aerial photos of the scene to aid the investigation.

SEPTA Transit Police along with officers from Warminster and Upper Moreland were spotted at the scene assisting Hatboro authorities.

Gardner said the investigation is continuing.
