Hatboro Man in Custody After Standoff with Police

A man, who reportedly has firearms in his possession, had barricaded himself in an apartment in the rear of 217 N. York Road in Hatboro following a domestic dispute.

UPDATE 5 P.M.

A 48-year-old Hatboro man is in police custody after allegedly hitting his 22-year-old son Sunday morning and then barricading himself in his apartment at 217 N. York Road for more than an hour, reportedly with firearms.

Hatboro Police were dispatched at approximately 11:57 a.m. for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival officers met with a 43-year-old Hatboro woman and her son outside of their apartment building. The woman reported that she and her son had been involved in an altercation with her ex-husband who was presently in the apartment.

During the altercation, it was reported to police that the ex-husband - who police declined to name - struck his 22-year- old son and was acting in an irrational manner. The man reportedly made comments about illegally purchasing a 9 millimeter handgun and possessing a shotgun. The woman and her son were able to exit the apartment, but the man remained and made comments indicating he was not going to be cooperative with police.

Due to the subject’s irrational behavior and comments about possessing guns, the Eastern Montgomery County SWAT was dispatched, entered the building and was able to make contact with the man and took him into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed at the apartment and no firearms were discovered.

The man is presently in custody at Hatboro Police headquarters and will be transferred to Montgomery County Emergency Services, Inc. in Norristown for a psychiatric evaluation. Hatboro Police continue to investigate and any criminal charges are pending further investigation.

York Road and surrounding streets were shut down for a period of time while the police tactical unit conducted their operations. Traffic was restored to the area by approximately 2 p.m. Sunday.

UPDATE 2:10 P.M.

The standoff has ended and no one was injured, Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner told Patch.

The man, who police have not yet identified, has been taken into custody. Gardner said he is in his 40s. Police are still unsure of the type and number of firearms the man allegedly had while he was barricaded in his Hatboro apartment at 217 N. York Road on Sunday afternoon.

The man's estranged wife and adult son told police that the man had firearms in his possession, police said, adding that it was believed that the man had a pistol and shotgun. They were not in the apartment during the time of the standoff, police said.

Hatboro Mayor Norm Hawkes said he was pleased with the cooperation in safely ending the situation in under two hours.
