Jeffrey Brous, a local fitness trainer at Horsham Athletic Club, has been chosen as a finalist in Be Well Philly’s Health Hero Challenge. Losing over 180 pounds, Jeffrey’s story is an inspiration to others as he helps them achieve their weight loss and fitness goals.
He may seem like a picture of health today, but that wasn’t always the case. Jeffrey’s story is one that we hear in variations throughout the course of life, but there is a difference. Jeffrey didn’t only achieve HIS goals, he’s helping others achieve theirs. Jeffrey grew up as a closeted homosexual that hid behind his weight. By the time he enrolled in college, he weighed over 300 pounds. It was an embarrassing moment when he couldn’t climb three flights of stairs. Rather than shirking him, his classmates rallied around him and helped him reshape his eating habits and exercise. As a result, he dropped over 180 pounds in about 3 years. Losing weight wasn’t enough for Jeffrey, he wanted to inspire others and pay it forward.
Today, Jeffrey is a trainer at Horsham Athletic Club in Horsham, Pennsylvania where he teaches Zumba Fitness, Zumba Toning, Yoga, Yogalates, Fitness Boot Camps and is available for personal and small group training sessions. Who would have thought that someone that couldn’t climb three flights of stairs could end up being a fitness instructor and helping to change countless lives?
“I reached out to Jeffrey after attending a seminar where he shared his life story and personal fitness journey. I knew right then and there that I needed to talk to him. I had been struggling with my weight and contemplating gastric bypass surgery. We met, I talked and I cried. Since that day, Jeffrey has been by my side helping me move forward, coaching me in making the right choices when it comes to nutrition, training me in fitness and is an amazing friend and support. I have never looked back. I have lost just over 50 lbs. I truly believe that a huge part of my weight loss success and my lifestyle changes are because of all that I have learned from Jeffrey,” says Gina Hill, Personal Training Client.
Jeffrey’s story is inspiring, not only because he has lost so much weight, but because of his attitude toward helping others. He’s a big advocate, of the “It Gets Better Project” which is a charity organization founded by Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller to inspire young people facing harassment. The It Gets Better Project™ has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 50,000 user-created videos viewed more than 50 million times.
Jeffrey does what so many forget. He leads by example. He inspires. He encourages. He pays it forward. He has not forgotten the darkness of the journey he traveled. Today he is a light unto the path of inspiration for others, and he won’t quit until his clients have won their battles.
