Can I camp?

Is it illegal to go into the woods, set up a tent, and camp there for the night?

Google "Wilderness" or "primitive" backpacking camping and you'll fin a lot of conversation about it. PA seems to relegate it to a few state forests out west, unless you want to rent a $25 tent site for a night in many places that won't feel like wilderness. If you're hiking the Appalachian Trail you can camp off it, a certain distance from the trail and not too close to water, by their rules. Campfires have their own special concerns, and you should be aware of bears in some areas, and of you car getting broken into if you leave it overnight in certain areas. Make sure someone knows where you're going and when you're expected back, be wary of hypothermia, maybe don't go alone; there are human predators. Phew! All that said, sounds like fun!
