Registration Open for Horsham Freezer 5K

This year's Freezer 5K fundraiser to benefit needy Horsham families will be held on Dec. 15.

Are you ready to break a sweat in the heat of ... winter?

Horsham Township is seeking runners (and walkers) for its second annual Freezer 5K and walk slated for Dec. 15.

So far, about 100 runners have signed up, according to Mark Hudson, one of the event's organizers. If nice weather is forecasted, Hudson said he expects a surge of last-minute entrants, as was the case last year when 175 people registered.

"We're hoping for the same," Hudson said.

The community-driven event last year generated support from several dozen businesses, Hatboro-Horsham School District and the Horsham Township Police Department.

The primary goal of the run–which benefits Horsham Township's Park and Recreation department–is to fill the freezers of needy Horsham families.

"We gave over-flowing food baskets and a $500 Giant food gift card to eight families in ’12," organizer Ted Taylor said. "We’d love to double that, or more!"

To do so, Taylor said organizers have set a goal of 800 runners, roughly twice as many as last year.
